Historical Description

Portbury, which gives the hundred its name, is situated in the valley northward from that tract of mountain we have just now spoken of, and between it and the harbour of Kingroad, on the Bristol Channel. It was anciently a town of the Romans, as appears from the indubitable evidence of the great quantity of coins of the lower empire, and foundations of old buildings, discovered here. North-west of Portbury, is Portishead, pleasantly situated on the south side of a high ridge of hills, finely wooded, which rise immediately from the skirts of the Channel, defending the town from the strong westerly winds. The shore is very rocky, and in some places nearly sixty feet in perpendicular height. The rocks are composed of a grit-stone, in which is some gypsum: and on them grow vast quantities of the kelp weed. Flat-fish and shrimps are caught on the beach.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

PORTBURY is a village and parish, with a station on the Bristol and Portishead branch of the Great Western railway, 128 miles from London, 8 north-west from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of its name, Long Ashton union and petty sessional division, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is a large and ancient structure in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and chapel, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock, erected by subscription in 1887, at a cost of £123, and 6 bells: there is a sanctus bell over the chancel: the church plate includes a chalice dated 1575: in the doorway of the south porch is a beautiful Norman arch: in the north aisle is a brass to Sara, widow of Walter Kemish, gent. ob. 1621, and her two daughters, Elizabeth and Frances, and two infant sons, Roger and Francis: the church was new roofed and re-seated in 1871, and in 1875 the south aisle was restored at a cost of £724: there are sittings for 500 persons: in 1882 Mrs. Griffin erected the lych gate at the entrance to the churchyard as a memorial to her father: in the churchyard are two fine yew trees, the trunk of one of which is 19 feet in circumference at 7 feet from the ground. The register dates from 1750: the register of the previous century has been abstracted. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £207, with residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Martin Carysfort Proby M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Wesleyan chapel near the railway station. The Portbury and Failand Village Club, erected in 1894 by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Brittan, of Failand Hill House, at a cost of about £1,000, and presented to the village, contains library, reading room, skittle alley and a large room for meetings, A room for games was added in 1897 by Mrs. Brittan. The charities are of £8 7s. 8d. yearly value, being the interest of £210 10s. invested in Consols, and left in 1772 by James Selby, of Bristol; in 1821 by James Rowles esq. of Portbury and also by Alderman Mugglesworth, of Wraxall. The parish was formerly occupied by the Romans; and coins, foundations of villas and other buildings, and a Roman road to the sea have been found here. The trustees of the late Sir John Henry Greville Smyth bart. of Ashton Court (d. 1901) are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is sand and clay; subsoil, red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 2,884 acres of land, 22 of water and 123 of foreshore; rateable value, £5,088; the population in 1891 was: civil, 439; ecclesiastical, 516.

By Local Government Board Order 16,500, March 24, 1884, Clapton Wick was transferred from Portbury to Clapton, Failand to Wraxall, and Ham Green, Happerton and another detached part to Easton-in-Gordano, for civil purposes.

Parochial Schools, held in the old buildings formerly belonging to the Augustinian abbey of Bristol, for 90 children; average attendance, 59.
