Historical Description

PORTISHEAD is a parish and watering-place, very pleasantly seated on the north side of a finely-wooded ridge of hills, rising boldly from the coast of the Bristol Channel, and is the terminus of a branch of the Great Western railway, 130 miles from London and 12 west-north-west from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county of Somerset, hundred of Portbury, Long Ashton union and petty sessional division, county court district of Bristol, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The parish was governed by a Local Board from 1892, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), is now controlled by an Urban District Council. The church of St. Peter is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, north aisle, south porch and a western tower with pierced parapet and four pinnacles, containing 6 fine bells: a wrought-iron screen separates the chancel and nave, and there are several stained windows: a chapel, used as a burying place by the Mohuns, and afterwards by the Jenner-Fust family, formerly existed on the north side of the chancel: in 1879—80 the church was restored and considerably enlarged by an addition to the nave and the erection of a new chancel, at a cost of £600: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from 1570. The living is a rectory, net yearly value, including 36 acres of glebe, £600, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Charles Frederick Norman M.A. rector of Mistley, Essex, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Jas. Stuart M.A. of University College, Oxford, and surrogate. Here is a Catholic chapel, dedicated to St. Joseph. The Congregational chapel, erected in 1877 at a cost of £3,000, is a building in the Early Gothic style, consisting of nave with semi-circular apse at the north end, transepts, south porch and a turret: there are sittings for over 400 people. The Wesleyan chapel, in the High street, completed in 1886, is a building in the Gothic style, and affords 300 sittings. Roath Road chapel was built in 1886 for the Plymouth Brethren, and there is also a meeting house for the Society of Friends. The village cross, standing south of the church, and about 20 feet in height, is in good preservation. Chappell’s charity, amounting to £50, is distributed yearly.

Portishead Point, strongly fortified by the Royalists during the Civil war, was besieged and taken by Sir Thomas Fairfax in 1645.

Portishead Dock,-now belonging to the Corporation of Bristol, was opened for traffic in June, 1879: the imports chiefly consist of grain and American produce, though there are facilities for the reception of timber, oil, sugar and other cargoes. The granaries on the dock have a storage capacity for 180,000 quarters of wheat. The depth of the water on the sill at the ordinary spring tide is 33 feet, and in the dock 27 feet. The Great Western and Midland Railway Companies have each offices on the dock, which, by these railways, is put in direct communication with all parts of the country. Steamers for loading at the South Welsh coal ports can lock out of Portishead dock and into Newport, Cardiff or Barry on the same tide.

The church of St. Barnabas, erected in 1865, is an iron structure, and will seat 300 persons; it is served by the clergy of the parish church. The Seamen’s Institute contains a reading-room for captains, officers and pilots, a refreshment and reading-room for seamen and a refreshment room for dockmen, and is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.: the library is furnished with books and periodicals, and the “Shipping Gazette” and various daily papers are taken. Thomas John Bunt, scripture reader of the Missions to Seamen Society, resides at the institute.

A Cemetery of 2 acres was opened at “The Chessels” in November, 1899, and is controlled by the Urban District Council, acting as a burial board.

The Portishead Working Men’s Reading Room and Club is in the High street, and has a library of about 300 volumes.

The parish of Portishead has charming woods reaching down to the water's edge, traversed by paths and provided with seats, and numerous vessels and ocean-going steamers are constantly passing and re-passing close to the shore, producing a scene full of life and interest. An esplanade with approaching roads was made in 1894 by the Corporation of Bristol, by whom also the whole is maintained. There is a good hotel, in the Elizabethan style, situated near the pier, the property of the railway company. The Bristol training-ship “Formidable,” for homeless and destitute boys, lent by the Admiralty in 1869, lies off here, and is managed by a committee.

The Corporation of Bristol are the principal landowners, and own about 700 acres, the greater part of which is splendidly situated for building purposes. They are also, with the rector, lords of the manor. The soil is clayey and sand; subsoil, limestone. The area is 946 acres; rateable value, £12,469; the population in 1891 was (including North Weston) 2,787; the population of the Urban District in 1901 was 2,544.
