Historical Description
PUBLOW is a parish, now including the village of Pensford and a portion of the hamlet of Woollard, 4 ½ miles south-west from Keynsham station on the main line, and adjoins Pensford station on the Bristol and Radstock branch of the Great Western railway, miles south-east from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, Clutton union Keynsham hundred and petty sessional division, Temple Cloud county court district, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Chew divides the parish from that of Compton Dando, and is crossed by a stone bridge. The church of All Saints is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, north porch and a lofty embattled western tower with pinnacles and gurgoyles, and containing 6 bells: the chancel is separated from the nave by a screen of wrought brass: there are memorial windows to the Rev. Arthur Bellamy, vicar 1872—98, and Mary his daughter and his mother; to the Rev. C. W. Devenish, and to the Rev. James Bellamy, his brother: the pulpit of carved oak was constructed from the doors of the old pews: the communion plate includes a silver chalice dated 1584: the church was restored in 1860, but in 1861 a portion of the roof and the top of the tower were destroyed by lightning: in 1886 the interior of the chancel was thoroughly restored and re-decorated at the expense of the Rev. Arthur Bellamy, vicar: there are sittings for 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1569. The living is a vicarage, with Pensford annexed, joint net yearly value £226, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Henry Howard Tripp M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The charities include a sum of £500 left by William Adams esq. of Whitley, in 1815, to trustees the interest to apprentice poor boys of Publow parish as tilers, plasterers, carpenters and cordwainers; there is also a bequest of £50 left by Mr. Vowles, of Bristol, the interest of which is distributed to the poor at Christmas. The parish has a Church Guild and a Ringers’ Club. The old stone round-house, formerly used as a lock-up, is still standing near the post office. Francis William Leybourne-Popham esq. of Hunstrete, Marksbury, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is good; subsoil, Ted sandstone and white lias. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The acreage is 1,311; rateable value, £2289; the population in 1891 was 492.
