Historical Description

PYLLE is a village and parish, with a station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 121 miles from London, 4 south from Shepton Mallet and 7 south-east from Wells, in, the Eastern division of the county, Shepton Mallet petty sessional division and union, Wells county court district, rural deanery of Shepton Mallet, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Thomas a Becket, rebuilt by Lord Portman (with the exception of the tower) in 1868, is a building of Mendip lias, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, restored and rehung in 1894, and Ellacombe chiming apparatus added at the cost of £68 10s. defrayed by Lord Portman: the stained east window was given by the Rev. H. F. B. Portman, rector, 1865—85, and his family: the fine carved oak reredos has five panels painted by Mrs. Cary, after designs by Fra Angelico: there are sittings for 142 persons. The register dates from the year 1591. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £110, including 19 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Viscount Portman, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Charles James McConnell, of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Here are the blue lime and selenitic cement works of Messrs. Farrance and Boyton. Viscount Portman is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil is blue lias. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,072 acres; rateable value, £1,349; the population in 1891 was 243.

School (mixed), built by Viscount Portman in 1874, & enlarged in 1899, for 90 children; average attendance, 73; & partly supported by his lordship.
