Historical Description

RADSTOCK is a populous and thriving parish, on the Road from London to Exeter, in a hollow amid an extensive mining district, 115 miles from London by the Great Western railway, via Frome, and 124 by the London and South Western railway, via Temple Combe, 8 north-west from Frome, 8 ½ south-west from Bath by road and 10 ½ by railway, in the Frome division of the county, Kilmersdon hundred and petty sessional division, Clutton union, Frome county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells.

The parish was formerly governed by a Local Board, constituted in 1874, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), it is now controlled by an Urban District Council of 13 members. It is well lighted with gas from works belonging to Earl Waldegrave: works for obtaining a supply of water from Downhead, near Cranmore, on the Mendip Hills, 8 miles distant, were begun by the late Local Board in 1894, and have been completed by the Urban Council at a cost of £12,000; the springs, held on lease from Lord Portman for 75 years, flow from the old red sandstone at a height of 660 feet above sea level, and the water has been shown by chemical analysis to be exceptionally pure and soft. The Bristol and North Somerset Railway Company laid down a single line of rail between Bristol and Radstock, and opened a station here in September, 1873, connected at this place with the line of the Great Western Railway Company from Bristol to Frome and Salisbury. In July, 1874, the Somerset and Dorset Railway Company opened a station here, their line being connected with the Midland railway at Bath, thus forming a communication from the north of England to the west and south-west. The church of St. Nicholas, with the exception of the tower and a portion of the south wall, has been entirely rebuilt at a cost of about £2,500, and was reopened in April, 1879; it is in the Perpendicular style, from designs by Mr. Willcox, architect, of Bath, and consists of chancel, organ chamber, nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: in the interior wall of the porch is a crucifix, and in a similar niche outside is a group of the Virgin with Child, both being much mutilated: some remains of a rood-loft exist, and there is a fine Norman font, removed some time back from a neighbouring farm, where it had served as a trough for cattle: the alabaster pulpit was erected by public subscription in 1889 as a memorial to the Rev. Horatio Nelson Ward B.A. rector 1853—88: there are sittings for 520 persons. The register dates from the year 1719. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, including 21 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Earl Waldegrave, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Thomas James Christie Gardner M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and surrogate. There is an iron Mission room, seating 100, at Butter buildings, and a railway van, used as a Mission room, on the Wells road. A Wesleyan Methodist chapel is now (1901) being erected in Fortescue road, at a cost of £5,000, and a Primitive Methodist chapel on Frome hill, at a cost of £3,000. There are also Baptist and Reformed Methodist chapels. There are two barrows in the parish, one of which is on Round hill. Coal abounds here, and is extensively worked by the Rt. Hon. Earl Waldegrave E.C., V.D. The market place, which is partly covered in, adjoins the railway stations, and a market for meat, vegetables and general produce is held here on Saturday and is well attended. Cattle sales are held on the second Tuesday in every month. The Victoria Hall and Institute, established in 1866 and enlarged and rebuilt in 1897, at a cost of £1,100, in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty, Queen Victoria, is a substantial building of stone, the site of which, together with £300, was given by the late Frances Countess Waldegrave: it comprises a reading room, well supplied with newspapers and periodicals, a library of over 1,000 volumes, and recreation, billiard and refreshment rooms; in the upper portion of the building is a hall, 55 feet by 34, and used for entertainments and meetings. Earl Waldegrave P.C., V.D. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is chiefly light; the subsoil is clay and of the red sandstone formation. The chief crops are corn and some land in pasture; The acreage is 1,005; rateable value, £12,271; the population of the parish and Urban District in 1891 was 3,438 and in 1901 was 3,365.

A School Board of 5 members was formed February 8, 1875; Mrs. Emily Martin, Wells hill, clerk to the board.

Board Schools (boys, girls & infants), built in 1874—5, at a cost of £2,200, & enlarged in 1882, 1887 & 1891, will now hold 508 children; average attendance, 180 boys, 150 girls & 170 infants.

National School (boys, girls & infants), erected in 1850, & enlarged in 1884 & 1893 & 1898, for 404 children; average attendance, 358.
