Historical Description

RIMPTON is a parish, three-quarters of a mile southeast from Marston Magna station on the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway and north-east from Yeovil, in the Southern division of the county, Taunton Dean hundred, Yeovil union (transferred from Sherborne union, December 28, 1894), Yeovil petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Merston, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. A mill stream runs through the village. The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: in the chancel are five stained windows, four of which were presented by Sir William Forbes bart. and there are memorial windows to Mr. Silas Feaver and to Miss Marion E. Genge-Andrews, d. 1886, inserted by her father, G. E. Genge-Andrews esq.: in the chancel are brasses to the Rev. Montague John Gregg Hawtrey, late rector, d. 1886, and to his son, Ralph De Beauvoir Hawtrey, commander R.N. who was lost at sea in 1873: the church retains a fine piscina and a hagioscope, and has an ancient font: the building was completely restored in 1877 at a cost of £1,400, and affords sittings for 130 persons. The register dates from the year 1537. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £186, including 50 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1887 by the Rev. George William Meggy B.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel here, built in 1891, to seat 60 persons. Martin’s charity and some others are together of £4 yearly value, which sum is distributed in money every third year. George Edward Genge-Andrews esq. of Rimpton House, who is lord of the manor, and Viscount Portman are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy loam, and the subsoil is clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 999 acres; rateable value, £1,902; the population in 1891 was 257.
