Historical Description

ROAD is a parish and extensive village, on the river Frome, which runs through it and the neighbouring parish of Woolverton, 4 miles north-east-by-north from Frome station on the Great Western railway, 10 south-east from Bath and 119 from London, in the Frome division of the county, Frome hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Frome, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. One-third of the village, called Roadhill, is in the North Bradley parish, Wilts. The village is lighted with oil lamps. The parish church of St. Lawrence is a fine building of stone, consisting of chancel, with vestry, nave of four bays, aisles and an embattled tower containing 6 bells: the east window, representing the “Ascension,” was inserted by a former rector in memory of his wife: the chancel is fitted with elegant stalls: in the south aisle is a canopied recess, and there are several piscinae: at one corner of the tower is a railed battlement, called “the Kings Chair,” and a tradition is current in the parish that Charles II. after the battle of Worcester (Sept. 3, 1651) ascended this tower for the purpose of reconnoitring the surrounding country: there is a brass with epitaphs to the memory of the clerks of Road and Woolverton, who were buried on the same day, 1799: the church was restored and an organ chamber added in 1874, and has sittings for 300 persons. At the entrance to the churchyard is a lych gate, erected in 1874. The register dates from the year 1587. The living is a rectory, with that of Woolverton annexed, joint net yearly value £365, including 75 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of H. S. Davy esq. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Henry Washington-Davy M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford, who resides at Woolverton. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. The United Counties Reading and News Rooms and Public Holl, in the main street of the village, was erected at the expense of R. P. H. Batten-Pooll esq. and a fine clock was placed in the front in 1887: the building contains reading, bagatelle and chess rooms, a library of over 300 volumes, and a large hall for meetings capable of containing 300 persons. In connection with the hall is a flourishing benefit club, with about 120 members, and also a cricket club. A village hall was built in 1866 by Mr. Edward Silcocks, and will hold about 200 persons. Road was formerly a market town, but has now only a pleasure fair, held annually on the first Monday after 9th September. The charities amount to £3 10s. yearly, which is distributed in bread. Road Manor is a modern house in the Italian style, and is now being lighted by electricity supplied by a turbine from a mill on the estate, with an embattled western tower at the east end, picturesquely seated on an eminence about half a mile west of the village, in a well-wooded park of about 60 acres, which contains a small lake; it is the seat of Robert Pooll Henry Batten-Pooll esq. D.L., J.P. lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is various, but generally light; the subsoil is mostly clay. The land is chiefly in pasturage, for dairy purposes. The area is 912 acres; rateable value, £2,235; and the population in 1901 was 463.

By Local Government Board Order 16,087, March 25, 1885, a detached part of Woolverton was amalgamated with Road and a part of Lower Street and Monkley, and under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882" (45 and 46 Vict. c. 58), Whitefields and another detached part of Tellisford were added from Tellisford, and Hitch Mead transferred from Road to Woolverton.

National, Roadhill (mixed), erected in 1830, for 150 children; average attendance, 76.

Wesleyan (mixed), built & endowed by the Pooll family in 1860, for 130 children; average attendance, 68.
