This place has given the title of baron to the Rodney family, the first peer being the famous Admiral Sir George Brydges Rodney bart. K.B. created Baron Rodney, 10 June, 1782. The church of St. Leonard is an ancient stone building, in the Perpendicular style, having a chancel, nave, embattled western tower with 4 bells and north porch: there are north and south chapels, the former being the burial place of the Rodney family, and the latter erected by subscription in 1879 to the memory of the Rev. G. H. U. Fagan, a former rector: in the Rodney chapel are numerous monuments of the Rodney family, including an altar tomb of stone, under a canopy, and bearing a recumbent effigy, in armour, of Sir Thomas Rodney, ob. 1478; a finely carved and canopied altar tomb of marble, with effigy to Lady Anna Rodney, ob. 1630, and another with the figure of a young man rising from a coffin, to a son of Sir Edward Rodney, ob. 1651: on the west side of the chapel is a stately mural monument of stone, on which, in two oval niches, under a canopy, the curtains of which are tied back, are the busts, with epitaph, of Sir Edward Rodney knt. ob. 1657, and Frances, his wife, ob. 1659: the monument to the Rodney family in their chapel was renovated at a cost of £200, defrayed by the family: there is also a handsome carved oak screen, presented by Sir E. Rodney in 1624, and two stoups: in 1879 the church was thoroughly restored, reseated with English oak, new chancel stalls of the same material and an organ added and the roof releaded and retimbered, at a cost of £1,100: in 1886 a stained east window was erected at a cost of £80, and a new oak panelled ceiling placed in the chancel, costing £60 in 1882 a memorial window was placed to Harriett Roberts: there is a very fine old carved pulpit, and also a covered font of Late Norman date: the communion plate is dated 1573: there are sittings for 120 persons. The register dates from the year 1624. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £176, including 20 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Sidney Coleridge Smith. There are charities of £3 10s. yearly value. Frederick Parsons esq. is lord of the manor. The land belongs to various freeholders. The soil is light on the side of the hills, resting on dolomitic conglomerate, and in the moor turf and light, with a clay subsoil. The land is chiefly in pasturage for dairy purposes. The area of the civil parish, including Draycott, is 2,641 acres; rateable value, £5,876; the population in 1901 was 671; this includes 501 in the hamlet of Draycot. £30 of the tithe rent-charge is assigned to Draycot.
