Historical Description

RUISHTON is a parish and village, near the river Tone, with a station called Thorn on the Chard branch of the Great Western railway, and is 3 miles east from Taunton, in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of Taunton Dean, Taunton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. George is a small but venerable edifice of stone, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower 56 feet in height, with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 3 bells; the porch and the base of the tower still exhibit Norman features; the upper portion of the tower dates from 1549: the south aisle is Decorated, and the nave Perpendicular: the stained east window represents events in the life of Our Lord: the east window in the south aisle was erected by the parishioners as a memorial to the late John E. Anderdon esq. of Henlade House: the church was restored and reseated in 1866, with seats previously in use in the Royal Chapel of the Savoy, Strand, London, and there are sittings for 200 persons. In the churchyard are tombs to the family of Proctor from 1621, and some remains of a stone cross. The register of baptisms dates from 1755; marriages, 1754; burials, 1760. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £80, including 12 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1890 by the Rev. William Buswell B.A. of Queen’s College, Cambridge. Henlade House, the property and residence of Henry Edward Murray-Anderdon esq. J.P. Woodlands House is the residence of Frederick C. Swindell esq. Ruishton House is the residence of Robert George Sommerville esq. The lords of the manor, which is part of the manor of Taunton Dean, are the trustees of the lata Alexander William Kinglake esq. B.A., D.L. (d. 1891) and Dr. H. Kinglake. The principal landowners are H. E. Murray-Anderdon esq. Lt.-Col. James Forbes Chisholm Batten, of Thornfalcon, Edwin Hardwill and Francis Payne Govier esqrs. and Mr. Blake. The parish is about equally divided into pasture and arable land. The soil is marl; subsoil, upper Ted sandstone. The area is 1,000 acres; assessable value, £2,504; the population in 1891 was 483. Henlade is a hamlet about a mile south and near Thorn station.
