Historical Description

Sampford Arundel is a small village, of about twenty houses in a street near the church, eighteen on Sampford Moor, six adjoining the parish of Trull, and six others in the hamlet of Whitehall. The manor was given by William the Conqueror to Roger Arundle, who, with other Norman chiefs, assisted him at the battle of Hastings.

SAMPFORD ARUNDELL is a small village and parish, near the road from Wellington to Exeter, 3 miles south-west from Wellington station on the Great Western railway, and south-west from Taunton, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Milverton, Wellington petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wellington, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of the Holy Cross is a small edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 5 bells: there is a marble monument to Christopher Baker esq. high sheriff of the county in 1724; also memorials to the Brown, Bellett, Were and other families and to former vicars of the parish: all the windows in the chancel and the west window are stained; the east window of the south aisle is a memorial to Sarah Nethercole, d. 1875: the north aisle retains a holy water stoup: there are sittings for 176 persons. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £140, with about 40 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. George Sweet M.A. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Edward Thomas Vaughan M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. On Sampford Moor is a Union chapel, erected in 1871. Werescote is occupied by John Lewis Lloyd esq.; Woolcombe, by Mrs. Lewis Morgan, wife of the late Rev. Lewis Morgan M.A.; Marlands is the residence of Arthur Pryse Maurice esq. and Easterlands, of Frederic George Slessor esq. The Messrs. Were are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The soil is a rich loam; subsoil, clay and sand; and produces excellent crops of barley, mangold, potatoes and turnips. The area is 1,105 acres; rateable value, £3,820; the population in 1901 was 339.

A School Board of. 5 members was formed March 30, 1875; W. T. Booker, Wellington, clerk to the board.
