Historical Description

SAMPFORD BRETT is a small village and parish, 1 mile south from Williton station on the West Somerset branch of the Great Western railway and 15 north-west from Taunton, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Williton and Freemanors, Williton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wiveliscombe, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. George is a small cruciform edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, west porch and an embattled tower on the south side, containing a clock and 5 bells, recast in 1894, and reconsecrated in 1895: the pulpit, reading desk and seats are of oak, handsomely carved: in the vestry is an altar tomb with recumbent effigy of a cross-legged knight in full armour, said to represent one of the Brets, by which family this manor was held from the time of Henry I. for a considerable period; Simon Bret or Brito, the first owner, was probably a follower of the Conqueror, and his eldest son, Richard Brito, was one of the four knights concerned in the murder of Archbishop Thomas a Becket; the figure of a woman carved upon a bench end at the bottom of the nave, with two children on either side of her feet, is said to represent Florence, wife of John Wyndham, ob. 1562; in the north transept is a stained window to the Rev. John Knight Greetham B.C.L. 26 years rector (1839—65), d. 1865; and in the west window the arms of Courtenay impaling Giffard and Clotworthy, 1744: there are mural monuments to Zacharias Windham, the Rev. Humphrey Tanner, rector, 1780; the Rev. Thomas Tanner, rector, 1830; and Francis Tripp, 1830; and in the churchyard to Lettice, wife of William Webster, rector, 1660: the church was restored in 1835 at a cost of about £2,000 by George Francis, 4th and last Earl of Egremont, and has sittings for 170 persons. The existing register dates from the year 1738. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £250, including 39 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Owen Howard Owen esq. of 4 Dover house, Cormont road, Lambeth, London S W, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Arthur Henry Tripp. Sir Alexander Fuller-Acland-Hood bart. M.P. who is lord of the manor; William Wyndham esq. of Dinton House, Salisbury; Sir Walter John Trevelyan bart. of Nettlecombe Court and Marwood Notley esq. of Combe Sydenham, Stogumber, are the principal landowners. The soil is a rich sandy loam, with some clay; subsoil, marl; and produces excellent crops of wheat, barley, mangolds, potatoes and turnips. The acreage of the parish is 1,151; rateable value, £2,085; the population in 1891 was 216 in the civil and 185 in the ecclesiastical parish; the population of the civil parish in 1901 was 178.

By Local Government Board Order 14,611, March 25, 1885, a detached part of Stogumber parish, known as Weston or Torweston, was amalgamated with Sampford Brett for civil purposes.

School (mixed), erected with house for mistress, in 1867, by the late Sir A. B. P. Fuller-Acland-Hood bart. for 100 children; average attendance, 55.
