SEAVINGTON ST. MICHAEL is a small parish and village on the road from Langport to Crewkerne, 4 miles east from Ilminster station on the Chard branch of the Great Western railway, and 5 north-west from Crewkerne, in the Southern division of the county, Ilminster petty sessional division, hundred of South Petherton, county court district of Crewkerne, union of Chard, rural deanery of Crewkterne, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Michael is a small but ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and a turret containing 3 bells: there are sittings for 138 persons. The register dates from the year 1689. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Dinnington annexed, joint net yearly value, £220, including 39 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Earl Poulett, and held since 1861 by the Rev. Joseph Phelps Billing, of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, diocesan inspector of schools, and also vicar of Seavington St. Mary, where he resides. The kennels of the Seavington Harriers are in this parish. The Warden and Fellows of St. Mary’s College, Winchester, who are lords of the manor, Mrs. J. England, the trustees of the late Earl Poulett (d. 1899), Mrs. Board and the rector are the chief landowners. The soil is light sandy loam and chiefly arable land. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The acreage is 274; rateable value, £708; the population in 1891 was 176.
