Historical Description

SELWORTHY is a parish and village, half a mile from the high road from Minehead to Porlock, 4 ½ miles west from Minehead terminal station on the West Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, east from Porlock and 13 west from Williton, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Carhampton, Dunster petty sessional division, union and county court district of Williton, rural deanery of Dunster, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The Horner stream, passing on the south-west side of the parish, forms the boundary between Selworthy and Luccombe, and after receiving a rivulet at the hamlet of Bossington, falls into the sea. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: there are several monuments and brasses, principally to the Staynings and Acland families, former lords of the manor, by whom the south aisle, in the roof of which there is some delicate oak carving, was rebuilt in 1490: in the church, secured by a chain, is a copy of Bishop Jewel’s “Defence of his Apology for the Church of England,” ordered to be provided by every parish in the reign of Edward the VI.; there are memorial windows to Joshua Stephenson M.A. rector 1802 to 1863, and to the Rev. Andrew Anderson: the church was entirely restored and the roof of the nave painted in 1874 by the late Right Hon. Sir T. D. Acland bart. P.C. at a cost of £1,500, and in 1891 the north aisle was new roofed and reseated at a cost of £545: there are sittings for 400 persons. In the churchyard is an ancient stone cross about 12 feet in height. The churchyard was enlarged in 1898. The registers date from the year 1673, and part of an earlier register of Elizabethan date has been recently found. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £174, including 57 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Charles Thomas Dyke Acland hart, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Alfred Edward Buchanan B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Part of the rectory house dates from the 14th century, and attached is a 15th century tithe barn. At Selworthy Green are several cottages, pleasantly situated and appropriated to the use of the people on the estate of Sir C. T. D. Acland bart. Selworthy Beacon, in this parish, is 1,014 feet, and Bossington Beacon, 798 feet above the sea level; the latter is a land mark to vessels in the Bristol channel. Situated on a high hill overlooking the church is an ancient encampment of an elliptical form, consisting of a rampart of stones and earth. Holnicote, the seat of Sir Charles Thomas Dyke Acland bart. M.A., D.L., J.P. has been twice destroyed by fire, once in 1799 and again in 1851: it is a plain building, enlarged in 1874 and 1899, pleasantly situated in beautiful grounds, and commanding a fine view of the surrounding country, and the woods and plantation are traversed by many pleasant walks extending for nearly 50 miles, and which, by permission of the owner, are open to the public: on the walls of the stables are arranged 30 stags’ heads, with the dates when they were respectively killed: the 15th century gateway belonging to the old house, built by the Staynings family, still remains. Sir C. T. Dyke Acland bart. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loamy on gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 2,835 acres (including common) of land and 45 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,599; the population in 1901 was 467.

On March 25, 1883, by Local Government Board Order 14,615, a detached part of Timberscombe, known as East Lynch, was amalgamated with this parish, and March 24, 1884, by Order 14,608, a detached part of Porlock, known as Bossington, was also added, for civil purposes.

School (mixed & infants), for 150 children; average attendance, 86.
