Historical Description

SHEPTON MONTAGITE is a parish on the Bruton and Sherborne road, 2 miles south from Bruton station on the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, 1 ½ south-east from Cole station on the Somerset and Dorset railway and 3 north-west from Wincanton, in the North Ferris hundred, Wincanton union, petty sessional division and county court district, Eastern division of the county, rural deanery of Bruton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled tower, with pinnacles, on the south side, containing 3 bells, one of which is cracked: the church was restored in 1896, when a new roof was put on and the site drained throughout at an expense of £200: there are sittings for 217 persons. The register dates from December 7, 1560. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £74, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Ilchester, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Henry Arthur Annesley Th. Assoc, of Kings College, London. There is a Congregational chapel, built in 1860. William Robert Phelips esq. of Montacute House, Ilminster, is lord of the manor, and the Earl of Ilchester P.C. and Henry Hobhouse esq. M.P. of Hadspen House, Pitcombe, are the chief landowners. The soil is part light and stony and part heavy clay, and the subsoil is chiefly colite rock. The chief crops are corn and roots; there is also some dairy land The area is 2,168 acres; assessable value, £1,894; the population in 1891 was 293 civil, 303 ecclesiastical.

By Local Government Board Order 16,580, March 25, 1885, and Order 16,581, March 24, 1884, Folly Cottages were transferred from Shepton Montague to Charlton Musgrove for civil purposes.
