Historical Description

Somerton, in the hundred of the same name, is about five miles from Langport, situated on elevated ground, and consists principally of five streets, containing several good houses, built of blue lyas-stone, brought from the quarries in the neighbourhood. This town, in ancient times, gave name to the whole county, and is supposed to have received its own from the aestival pleasantness of its situation. In the time of the Saxons, it is said to have been of considerable extent, fortified and walled round. Ina, king of the West Saxons, had a palace and castle here. In 877, the place was plundered, and nearly destroyed, by the Danes; but, being soon rebuilt, it became the most considerable town in the west. When Edward the Black Prince had taken John, king of France, prisoner, he was removed from the castle of Hertford to that of Somerton, as a place of greater security. On the decay of the castle, the common prison of the town was erected out of its ruins. The remaining fragments of this last building are still extant, and part of the Bear Inn is built out of them; at the back of which is a remnant of the old wall, and part of a semicircular tower.

There were, at the time of the Norman survey, few more extensive manors than that of Somerton; which comprehended, besides the town, the borough of Langport, and the lands of three Saxon Thanes.

The church consists of a nave, chancel, and side aisles, with an octangular tower on the south side. In the south wall of the belfry, in a niche formed by a plain pointed arch, lies the effigy of ' one Editha, in portrature of stone, the whiche was by lyke the Saxten, that had the rule of the churche and houses; and by lyke the foundres of the steeple. ’

Near the church is an excellent Free-School. The town is under the government of a bailiff, chosen annually by the inhabitants; and there is a hall in the centre of the town for holding petty sessions.

The market is on Tuesday, and there are five fairs for cattle, three weeks intervening between each: the first begins on the Tuesday in Passion Week. There are also two other fairs, held September 30, and November 8, for cattle, sheep, hogs, and pedlary ware.

Considerable quantities of fine white alabaster are found within a mile of Somerton, on the eastern side of the hill, above the hamlet of Hurcot.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SOMERTON is a market town, on the river Cary and on the high road from Wells to Taunton, 5 miles northeast from Langport station on the Yeovil branch of the Great Western railway, and 7 south from Glastonbury station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, and 126 from London; a line between Langport and Castle Cary, shortly to be commenced, will pass through this parish; it is the head of a petty sessional division, in the Eastern division of the county, Somerton hundred, Langport union and county court district, rural deanery of Ilchester, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The town is paved, lighted with gas by a company from works in the town and supplied with water from the Somerton and District waterworks. A court leet is held yearly in October. The police arrangements are under the control of the county police. The church of St. Michael is an ancient edifice of stone in the Decorated style, with Perpendicular additions, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled octagonal tower over the south transept, containing a clock and 6 bells: near the south transept is a recumbent female effigy of stone of the 11th century: in the north transept is a brass to Christopher Overton, dated 1683; the pulpit, of carved oak, is dated 1615, and the communion table 1626; the nave roof, of oak, is a splendid example of Perpendicular wood work of that period: the church was restored in 1889—90 at a cost of £3,585, and the chancel at a further cost of £900, defrayed by the Earl of Ilchester, who is lay rector; an organ was erected in 1901 at a cost of about £550: there are sittings for 750 persons. The register dates from the year 1697. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £285, including 108 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Ilchester, and held since 1898 by the Rev. George Thomas Steacy B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Congregational chapel, erected in 1803, will seat 350 persons; the Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1846, has 200 sittings and the Bible Christian chapel 150 sittings: the Friends’ meeting house, built in 1876, will seat 150 persons; and there are Salvation Army barracks holding 200. The Cemetery, 2 acres in extent, was formed in 1875, and is under the management of the Parish Council, of which E. W. Valentine esq. is chairman. There is an ancient market cross, dated 1673, and about 30 feet in height. The market, formerly held on Tuesday, is now quite obsolete. Fairs are held on the last Monday in January, on Palm Tuesday, and the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th Tuesdays following, on Michaelmas Day and 8th November. In the town is a shirt collar factory and a brewery, which afford employment to a considerable number of people. Attached to the police station here, which is the headquarters of the constabulary for the Somerton district, is a court room, a consultation room and lavatory, and a number of cells. The G Co. of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, Prince Albert’s (Somersetshire Light Infantry) is stationed here. An Institute is now (1901) in course of erection, as a memorial to Lady Smith, from funds left for the purpose by the late Col. William Pinney: it will contain a reading room and a mission room. There are almshouses for four aged men, founded in 1626 by Sir Edward Hext, knighted at Whitehall, 12 May, 1604, and endowed with £50 yearly; and other almshouses for widows, founded in 1866 by Mrs. Scott Gould, of Moredon, North Curry: charities of £35 yearly value are distributed in kind. The Somerton church-lands estate, consisting of certain lands and houses, left at various times to defray the repairs and expenses of the church, increased in value as the old leases expire, and now (1901) amounts to about £162 annually. This was formerly the principal town in Somerset and the residence of some of the Saxon kings, who had a castle here, afterwards made a state prison, and in which John, King of France, is said to have been confined by Edward III.: the gaol was afterwards built upon the site. The Stawels, Barons Stawel of Somerton, a title which became extinct on the death of Edward, 4th baron, in 1735, were anciently connected with this place. Somerton Erleigh, now (1901) unoccupied, is the property of Frederick Wake Pretor-Pinney esq. J.P. who resides at The Grange. Somerton Court, the property of Major J. Hall-Stephenson, is now (1901) occupied by John Mainwaring Hall esq. M.A. The Earl of Ilchester, who is lord of the manor, and Frederick Wake Pretor-Pinney esq. J.P. are the chief landowners. The area is 6,350 acres; rateable value, £9,605; the population in 1901 was 1,797.

Petty Sessions held at the Court House, Somerton & Town Hall, Langport (alternately), about fortnightly on Mondays at 11 am. The parishes in the division are Aller, Babcary, Barton St. David, Charlton Adam, Charlton Mackrell, Compton Dundon, Curry Rivel, Drayton, Fivehead, High Ham, Huish Episcopi, Keinton Mandeville, Kingsbury Episcopi, Kingsdon, Kingweston, Langport, Long Sutton, Lydford East, Lydford West, Muchelney, Pitney, Somerton & Swell The parishes of Butleigh Puddimore Milton, Street, Walton, West Camel & Yeovilton are also included in this division for tax purposes, & those of Baltonsborough, Curry Rivel, Drayton, Fivehead, Kingsbury Episcopi & Swell are included in another division.

Free Grammar, Board street, founded in 1676, for the free education of 15 boys, by Thomas Glover, who endowed it with an estate of small value, but it is now an elementary school under the Board of Education: there are now (1901) 100 boys.

National (for girls & infants), built in 1851 by Miss A. M. Pinney & enlarged in 1888 by Lady Smith & supported by F. W. P. Pinney esq. J.P.; it will hold 200 children; average attendance, 113.

A School Board of 5 member was formed Sept. 1888; John Small Taylor, North street, clerk to the board.

Board (infants), for 80 children; average attendance, 58.
