Historical Description

The parish of Cadbury South, situated in a very populous and beautiful part of the county, remarkable for "one of the noblest fortifications in this, or perhaps, any other county, called by old topographers, Camalet, but by the natives, Cadbury Castle. "It is situated at the extremity of a steep ridge of hills, nearly south of Castle-Cary, and was probably one of the strongest positions in the kingdom. The form of the ramparts appears to have been accommodated to that of the hill; but there being only obscure accounts of this fortification, it is difficult to guess at what period it was constructed. Leland speaks of it in a kind of ecstasy; "Good God! (says he) what deep ditches! what high ramparts! what precipices! —In short, it really appears to me to be a wonder both of art and nature."

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SOUTH CADBURY is a parish and village miles east from Sparkford station on the Great Western railway, 5 ½ south from Castle Cary, and 6 west from Wincanton, in the Eastern division of the county, Catsash hundred, Wincanton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Cary, archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The parish is separated from that of North Cadbury and from Sutton Montis parish on the south by two streams flowing westwards. The church of St. Thomas a Becket is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, with south aisle, nave of three bays, south aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the pulpit and font are of Bath stone: in the aisle is a piscina and a hagioscope; five of the windows are stained, and include one with a figure of Thomas a Becket: in 1874 the church (with the exception of the tower) was restored and reseated with open benches of carved oak and a stone Teredos erected at a cost of £1,164, the font has an octagonal basin, with panelled sides in quatrefoils and stands on a square base: there are sittings for 150 persons. The register dates from the year 1582. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £195, including 32 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Capt. F. J. Wentworth Bennett, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Otho Talbot Bourdois Croft B.A. of University College, Durham. Cadbury Castle, the “Camelot” of the Arthurian legend, is a bold and prominent hill to the south-west of the village, rising to a considerable height, with an area on the top of about 30 acres; the general shape is that of a trapezium, the longest side being towards the north: the sides of the hill have a steep natural slope, especially on the north, west and south, and are surrounded by four lines of earthworks similar in their main features, but more boldly and strongly constructed towards the east: the upper rampart, which defended the summit, is, where perfect, from 8 to 10 feet in height, the outer face being about 50 feet high from the bottom of the ditch; the next two ramparts are together about 60 feet in height measured from the crown of the upper vallum to the base of the lower fosse: the lowest rampart, still in parts 50 feet high, has no ditch, and on the south side the slope is further defended by a series of zigzag terraces, continued from the base of the lowest rampart to the foot of the hill: this arrangement also, appears in a less elaborate form on the north side; the western, northern and eastern sides of the hill have been planted, but the south side, which is open, exhibits in a very complete form the nature of the defences, the date of which has been fixed at some period considerably anterior to the Romano-British period: the upper rampart was excavated about 1887, and found to contain fragments of pottery; an early British coin, a bronze armilla, a stone axe and many Roman coins have also been met with on the spot: several of the hills around Cadbury have also been fortified and appear to have served as outworks to this stronghold, from which five or six ancient roads, still traceable, radiated to every point of the compass: at the north-east angle of the hill is a spring called “King Arthur’s Well,” and west of it is another known as “Queen Anne’s Wishing Well.” The fortress is separated from the downs by the Whitcomb valley, through which runs a small stream, and immediately under the hill are four or five springs called “Sigwell” (Siege-quelle), the “springs of victory” or six wells where it is said the Saxon invaders refreshed themselves before their attack on Camelot. On the west side of the hill, in a field called “Westwoods,” dose by King Arthur’s lane, trenches have been met with filled with the skeletons of men and boys, thrown in promiscuously, and believed to be the remains of the last of the British defenders of this great stronghold. The views obtained from the hill are very extensive, and include on the north the Mendip range; westward, the Bristol Channel and the Quantocks: the Blackdown hills, south of Taunton, can also be seen, and on the hither side of these Castle Neroche and Hambdon Hill: in the vale rises Brent Knoll, Glastonbury Tor and Dunsdon, and the course of the river Jael or Yoel is also marked. Capt. Frederick James Wentworth Bennett is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is sandy loam; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are corn and orchard produce and some land in pasture. The acreage is 687; assessable value, £862; the population in 1901 was 148.

National School (mixed), erected in 1830, for 52 children; average attendance, 30.
