Historical Description

The small village of South Petherton. Its original name is said to be Pedred’s Town, derived from its situation on the river Pedred, or Parret; and the epithet South has been added, to distinguish it from North Petherton.

The river Parret passes here under a stone bridge of three arches, a mile south of the church, on the turnpike road from Ilminster to Yeovil. This bridge was formerly of wood, which having become ruinous, and two children having been drowned in the river near it, the parents of those children built it of stone, and caused their little effigies to be placed on it, to commemorate their unhappy fate.

In ancient times, South Petherton was of some note, as the residence of Ina, King of the West Saxons; but at present, it has little to attract the notice of the traveller.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SOUTH PETHERTON is a small town and parish, giving name to a hundred, and is on the river Parrett, 3 miles south-west from the Martock station on the Yeovil branch of the Great Western railway, 136 from London, 5 east-north-east from Ilminster, 5 north from Crewkerne, in the Southern division of the county, Ilminster petty sessional division, Yeovil union, Crewkerne county court district and in the rural deanery of Crewkerne, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The town is well paved and lighted with gas, and supplied with water from private wells. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a cruciform building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, south porch and a central embattled tower, the upper stages of which are octagonal, containing a clock and 8 bells: the nave, aisles, south transept and upper part of the tower are Perpendicular, and the chancel, south porch and lower part of the tower Early English, with more recent insertions: the north transept is Decorated: in the south transept is a tomb of Purbeck marble to Sir Giles Daubeney, ob. 11th January, 1445, great-grandfather of the first Earl of Bridgwater of this family: the church was restored in 1861, and again in 1879—80, at a cost of £1,707, and in 1896 the tower was restored and two bells added at a cost of £950, the bells being the gift of Hugh Ruscombe Poole esq. and Mrs. Poole: there are sittings for 800 persons. The register dates from the year 1574. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £175, with residence and 1 acre of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Frederick Anthony Lefroy M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel (Coke Memorial) is a building of stone in the Gothic style, with Sunday schools and minister’s residence attached, and was erected in 1882 at a cost of £3,572: the chapel will seat 320 persons. The Congregational chapel, erected in 1863, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, seating 500 persons: a manse adjoining was erected in 1874, and in 1882 a school house with class rooms and an assembly room, seating 500 persons, were added. A Nonconformist society, known as the “Old Meeting,” was founded here in Palmer street in 1688, and maintained at first by the Presbyterians, but eventually became Unitarian; in 1747, the society became Congregational, but was finally broken up about 1844: two small silver cups or beakers, used in celebrating the “Ordinance,” are now (1901) in possession of the trustees of the late J. Patten Daniel esq.; one of these has the hall-mark of 1691—2, and the other of 1697—8. A cemetery of 3 ½ acres, enlarged about 1897 by gift of 1 ½ acres of the late William Blake esq. J.P. of Bridge, and half a mile from the town, was formed in 1868, and is under the control of the Parish Council; it has two mortuary chapels. The market is obsolete, as is also the sheep fair, formerly held annually on the 6th of July. There is a Volunteer Fire Brigade. The charities are of £60 yearly value. The M Co. of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, Prince Albert’s Somersetshire Light Infantry, has its head quarters here. Many interesting relics have been met with hereabouts; these include a bronze palstave or axe-shaped two-looped celt, found in 1842, three bronze celts, found in 1830 at Wigborough, near there, and an oval bronze seal of the 14th century, found in April, 1853, in the garden of Mr. Henry Norris, sen. South Petherton, with a figure of St. Michael treading on the dragon, and the inscription " S’ Hugonis de Pencriz.” The palace of Ina, king of the We, st Saxons (A.D. 690—725), is an interesting building, originally possessed and used as a residence by the Saxon king whose name it bears, and subsequently by the Daubeney family, who became owners also of the greater part of the surrounding country: the palace having been allowed for many years to crumble and decay, was restored by the late Edmund Estcourt Gale esq, and it is now the property of and occupied by Colonel Arthur Reginald Hoskyns R.A., J.P. Wigborough House, a fine Tudor mansion, erected in 1585, which has been occupied by the families of Compton, Hele and Mundry, is the property of the trustees of the late George Moody esq. and now in the occupation of Ernest E. Look esq. Bridge, the property of William Farewell Blake esq. of 29 Brunswick gardens, Campden Hill, London W, is a substantial residence, pleasantly situated in well-timbered grounds of about 400 acres. Wm. Parsons Peters esq. who is lord of the manor, Maj. Franklin Sealy Bridge, of Cranford, Exmouth, the trustees of the late James England esq. William Farewell Blake esq. and Abraham Hodges esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is clay and loam, and the subsoil is marl stone, sand and clay of lias. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, flax and hay. The area is 3,310 acres; rateable value, £11,256; the population in 1891 was 2,250.

Board (boys), built in 1870, for 130 children; average attendance, 109.

National (girls & infants), built in 1863, for 240 children; average attendance, 67 girls & 110 infants.
