Historical Description

SPAXTON is a parish and village, under the Quantock hills, 6 miles west from Bridgwater station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway, in the Bridgwater division of the county, western division of Cannington hundred, Bridgwater petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Bridgwater, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Margaret is a building of stone, in the Later English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 5 bells: there is an altar tomb to a knight and his lady; a memorial window to the Rev. James Galloway, late rector, erected in 1874 by his family, and another erected in 1898 to the late George White esq. barrister-at-law, of London: in 1897 a stained window was placed in the south chancel aisle, in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria: there are sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £380, with 36 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Perry Fairfax Nursey M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. There is an iron chapel of ease at Merridge and also Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. A religious community was established in 1845 Four Forks. Cooke's charity consists of six almshouses for poor men or women, who each receive 2s. weekly, with coals, light and clothing. The pumping station and tanks of the Bridgwater water works are at Ashford, near Cannington, in this parish. The Poot’s Land charity consists of the rents of two farms situate at Merridge. Edward James Stanley esq. M.P. of Quantock Lodge, Over Stowey, and the Hon. Mrs. Stanley, who is lady of the manor, are the principal landowners. The soil is red clay and the subsoil stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, roots and pasturage. The acreage is 3,552; rateable value, £5,766; the population in 1891 was 904 in the civil and 985 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order, 7,765, Dec. 29, 1878, a detached part of Spaxton known as North Street was added to Fiddington; by Order 7,749, Dec. 20, 1878, Quanton Farm, Park and Wood were amalgamated with Enmore; by Order 18,100, Mar. 25, 1885, the following additions were made to Spaxton, Longthorns from Aisholt, a detached part of Nether Stowey and Crossfield Farm from Goathurst, and under the provisions of the “Divided Parish Act, 1882” (45 and 46 Vict. c. 58), Bush Farm from Charlinch.
