Historical Description

St. Decuman’s, remarkable only for its being a monument of popish ignorance and superstition.

Watchet is a sea-port town in this parish, at the mouth of a small river, about four miles to the east of Dunster. — It is a place of great antiquity, and often mentioned in history for the ravages committed by the Danes. About seven or eight vessels belong to this port, which trade in coals, or serve as coasters to Bristol, where they supply the glass-houses with the ashes of seaweed, of which abundance is burnt here for that purpose. On the shore is a sort of pebble-stones, which the neighbouring farmers burn into lime, and use it both as a manure for the land, and a cement in building, being esteemed remarkably durable. The market is on Saturday.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke
