Historical Description

STANTON DREW is a parish, on the river Chew, consisting of the tithings of Stanton Drew, Stanton Wick and Belluton, on the high road from Bristol to Wells, 1 ½ miles south-west from Pensford station on the North Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, and about 7 south from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, Keynsham hundred and petty sessional division, union of Clutton, Temple Cloud county court district, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. Under the provisions of the Divided Parishes Act, 1882, the parish of Pensford, or St. Thomas Pensford, was incorporated with this parish, by Local Government Board Order 15,683, March 24, 1884. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle, north porch and a tower containing a clock and five bells; the tower dates from the 13th century, and there are remains of a good doorway of the same period: the gallery, erected by Peter Eaton Coates esq. was removed about 1890: the curious old font is said to be Early Norman or Late Saxon: the monuments to the Foster and Lyde families in the north aisle or Strachey chapel were thoroughly restored in 1889 at the expense of Sir Edward Strachey bart.: at the east end of the church is the mortuary chapel of the Coates family, which is kept in repair by the lord of the manor; the communion plate dates from 1600: in 1889 the church was internally renovated and re-seated at a cost of £500, and affords sittings for 300 persons. The register commences from the year 1651. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value from tithe rent-charge £181, with residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Bath, and held since 1901 by the Rev. John Wynn Werninck. There is a Wesleyan chapel here, and a Friends’ burial ground dating from 1669. In a field in about the centre of the parish, and near to the church, are several clusters of huge stones, forming circles, some of which lie flat on the ground, while others remain erect: one of the circles is composed of fourteen stones, another circle of about, six, but some of these monoliths are not placed in any regular order; near Sandy lane is an isolated fragment: according to Dr. Fergusson, these stones belong to the Arthurian age, and are commemorative of the 11th battle of King Arthur, “in morte quod dicitur Agnea,” in the locality of Maes Knoll, fought when on his way from Caerleon on the Usk (9th battle), Severn (10th battle), to Badon hill, where the 12th battle was fought: there is one stone on the road to Chew from Bristol, called the “King Stone” or “Hautville’s Quoit,” of different material to the rest, said by tradition to have been hurled by Sir John de Hautville, whose monument exists in Chew Magna church, from Maes Knoll. The old copper works, afterwards converted into paper mills, are closed. Twyford House, the property and seat of George Duncan Armstrong esq. is a modern mansion. Stanton Court is the residence of Samuel Baker Coates esq. Belluton House is now occupied by Arthur Gilbert Rumball esq.: the parents of John Locke, the philosopher, resided here. S. B. Coates esq. who is lord of the manor, Sir Edward Strachey bart. M.P. Sutton Court, Bishop’s Sutton, and Lansdowne Daubeney esq. of Norton Malreward, are the chief landowners. The soil is chiefly sandy; subsoil, red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area of the united parishes is 2,061 acres; rateable value, including Pensford, £5,842; the population in 1891 was 690.

A School Board of 5 members was formed February 16, 1887, for the united parishes of Stanton Drew & Pensford.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1857, for 100 children; average attendance, 56; with an endowment of about £30 yearly.
