Historical Description

STAPLEGROVE is a parish, on the road from Taunton to Milverton, 1 ½ miles north-west from Taunton station on the Great Western railway, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Taunton and Taunton Dean, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Taunton, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The Great Western railway skirts the parish. The church of St. John is a building of stone of the 15th century, the aisles being subsequently added, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles and an embattled tower on the south side containing 5 bells: a vestry was added in 1892: the church was restored in 1857 at a cost of £1,200, and again since 1873 at a cost of £620, and has sittings for 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £170, with residence, in tie gift of trustees, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Stafford Tordiffe M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. In this parish is Taunton school, for description of which see Taunton. There is a small flock and shoddy factory. The chief landowners are Arthur William Turner and Henry Gribble Turner esqrs. Charles Edward Jeffries Esdaile esq. of Cothelstone House, the representatives of the late Joseph Welch, John Amery esq. and Mrs. Street. The soil is light stone brash; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, roots, with some grazing land The area is 1,171 acres; rateable value, £3,418; the population in 1891 was: civil, 1,090; ecclesiastical, 778 On March 25, 1885, by Local Government Board Order 18,140, a part of the parish of St. James’s, Taunton, outside the municipal boundary, was amalgamated with this parish.

National School (mixed), erected in 1852, for 120 children; average attendance, 105.
