Historical Description

STOGUMBER is a parish and village, with a station, 1 mile east, on the West Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, and is 5 miles south-by-east from Watchet, 7 north-by-east from Wiveliscombe and 175 by rail from London, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Williton and Freemanors, Williton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wiveliscombe, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, two chapels, nave of five bays, aisles, north and south porches, and an embattled western tower, 72 feet high, containing a clock and 6 bells: in the chancel are two memorial stained windows; and on the south side are the effigies of a knight in armour and two ladies, one on each side, representing Sir George Sydenham kt. a major in the army of Charles I. ob. 17 Jan. 1661—2 and Susan (Sydenham) and Elizabeth (Gilbert), his wives: at their feet are a kneeling female and figures of three infanta: there are also several ancient mural monuments, and a brass to Margery (Chamberlayne), wife of Edmund Windham esq. of Kensford, ob. 1585: the stained west window is a memorial to Charles Rowcliffe, d. 1875, and there are two others in the north aisle to Charles Edward Rowcliffe, d. 1877 and Mary his wife, d. 1872; the rood stairs remain: the church was restored in 1875 at a cost of £2,500, and affords sittings for 320 persons: in the churchyard stands an ancient cross. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Wells, and held since 1871 by the Rev. Edward Henry Jones Th. Assoc. K.C.L. The Baptist chapel here was endowed in 1690 by Jane Prowse with a sum of £250, secured on a farm at Bampton, Devon. There are almshouses for six poor widows, each of whom receives one shilling per week from Marwood Notley esq. of Combe Sydenham, in this parish; charities of £40 yearly are distributed in clothing and blankets. Here is the well-known Stogumber Brewery Company Limited, celebrated for its pale ale; the water used in its manufactnre is obtained from a beautiful spring near the village. Sir Walter John Trevelyan bart. of Nettlecombe Court, the trustees of the manor estate, the Rev. William Sweet-Escott B.A. rector of Leigh, Worcestershire, Marwood Notley esq. and Capt. Sir A. Fuller-Acland-Hood bart. M.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is a rich loam, with some clay; subsoil, marl and stone rush; it produces abundant crops of wheat, beans, barley, mangolds, potatoes and turnips. The area is 5,349 acres; rateable value, £6,514; the population in 1901 was 832.

On March 25, 1885, by Local Government Board Order 14,612, a detached part of this parish, known as Halsway, was amalgamated with Bicknoller, and by Order 14,611, Weston or Torweston was transferred from Stogumber to Sampford Brett for civil purposes.

National School (mixed), restored & enlarged in 1871, for 153 children; average attendance, 78.
