Historical Description

STOGURSEY (or Stoke Courcy or De Courcelles) is a parish and village, bounded on the north by the Bristol channel, 8 ½ miles north-west from Bridgwater station on the main line of the Great Western railway; at Bridgwater is also a station on the Somerset and Dorset railway; the parish is in the Western division of the county, western division of Cannington hundred, Bridgwater petty sessional division, Williton union and county court district, rural deanery of Quantoxhead, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. This place takes its name from the family of de Courcy or Courcelles, whose chief residence it was The church of St. Andrew is a fine building of stone, partly in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, opening to the church, separated by Norman arches, north porch and a central tower with leaded spire containing a clock and 6 bells, the sixth bell having been added in 1866: the tower, now the oldest existing portion, is in plan an oblong, the longest sides facing the east and west so as to allow of a wide chancel arch, the columns and capitals of which are extremely beautiful, and on the east side exhibit features almost classical in their details: the body of the church was rebuilt in the reign of Henry VII.: the church retains an Early Norman font: the north transept was dedicated to St. Erasmus: the south transept, called also “the Chapel of our Lady of Pity,” is the burial place of the family of Verney and contains a tomb with recumbent effigy in stone to Sir Ralph Verney, ob. 1353, and another to John Verney, who died during the reign of Henry VI.: the east window, erected in 1866, and the west window, in 1871, are stained: the church was restored and reseated in 1866, partly at the cost of the late Sir A. B. P. Fuller-Acland-Hood bart. and has sittings for 618 persons. The register dates from the year 1647. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £190, with 10 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Eton College, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Frederick Meade-King M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford, and rural dean of Quantoxhead; the Provost and Fellows of Eton College are owners of the great tithes, which were commuted at £800. Here are Congregational and Baptist chapels. In the hamlet of Stolford, 3 miles north-east, is a small wooden church, built in 1866, at the expense of the late Sir Peregrine P. F. P. Acland bart. of Fairfield (d. 1871), and has 124 sittings. There are almshouses for six old women, rebuilt in 1869, by the late Sir P, P. Fuller-Palmer-Acland bart. and others for three old men. The total annual value of the charities is now (1901) £344, viz. rents £320 and dividends £24; there are 26 recipients. On the south side of the village are the remains of the castle, one of the principal fortresses in the 12th century of the powerful house of Courcy, but transferred to Faukes de Breaute on his marriage with the heiress of that family; it then successively belonged to the families of FitzPain and Percy, but it was taken and burnt by William, Lord Bonville, brother-in-law of Richard, Earl of Warwick, after the first battle of St. Albans, May 23rd, 1455, and has since remained in ruins; traces of the bridge are still visible, and portions of two towers, some walls and the sally-port remain. There are also remains of an old Market cross. The priory of St. Andrew, a Benedictine house, was founded in the time of Henry II. by Hugh de Neville, as a cell to the Abbey of Lonlay, in Normandy, but in 1338 only the prior and one monk remained. St. Andrew’s well, which abundantly supplies the village with good drinking water, was inclosed by the late Sir Peregrine P. F. P. Acland bart. Sir Alexander Fuller-Acland-Hood bart. M.P. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clay and the subsoil stone. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats, barley and pasturage. The area is 5,853 acres of land, 5 of water and 2,711 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,630; the population in 1901 was 1,034.
