Historical Description

STOKE-SUB-HAMDON is a parish comprising the villages of East and West Stoke, on the river Parrett, 2 miles south-east from Martock station and 1 ½ miles west from Montacute station on the Yeovil and Durston branch of the Great Western railway, and 6 west-by-north from Yeovil, in the Southern division of the county, Tintinhull hundred, Yeovil petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Martock, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The village is lighted with gas supplied by the Martock Gas Co. Limited. The church of St. Andrew is a fine cruciform building of stone, in the Norman, Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch and an embattled tower rising over the north transept and containing 5 bells: the chancel arch is Norman: there are three fine piscina, two of these being double: in the chancel are two low-side windows and a fine recumbent effigy of John Strode, gent. ob. 1725, and the south transept contains the effigy of a priest vested, and has nine small stained windows, erected in 1877, by John Winter Walter esq. in memory of his wife and children: in the north transept is a memorial window, erected in 1881, by the Rev. Frederick Shepherd M.A. vicar 1875—84, in remembrance of his wife: the pulpit is a fine specimen of carved oak of the Jacobean period: there are sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, with 2 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Major J. W. B. Hawkesworth, the impropriator of the tithes, and held since 1884 by the Rev. William John Rowland M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The Congregational chapel, erected in 1865, together with a school, at a cost of £1,973, is a building in the Gothic style, with a tower and spire. There is also a Wesleyan chapel with school. The Stoke Working Men’s Institute, a building of Ham stone, was erected in 1883, and contains billiard and reading rooms, with library; there are about 60 members. Glove-making is extensively carried on here, and gives employment to a large number of hands. A stock fair is held annually on April 25. On Hamdon Hill, which is partly in this parish, are some extensive stone quarries and a portion of a series of British earthworks, extending several miles in all directions, and re-fortified by the Romans: the remains of entrenchments and fortifications are still visible, as well as the Roman fossway from Ilchester to Petherton bridge, which passes through the northern part of the parish. H.R.H, the Duke of Cornwall and York K.G. is lord of the manor and principal landowner, Mrs. Chaffey-Chaffey, of East Stoke, and Major John William Bain Hawkesworth, of Stokeford, Wareham, are also landowners. The soil is loamy and stone brash and the subsoil clay and stone brash. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, roots and some land in pasture. The area is 1,168 acres; rateable value, £5,279; the population in 1901 was 1,612.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Sept. 1, 1898. Ernest Douglas Raymond, clerk.
