Historical Description
STON EASTON is a parish and a pleasant and picturesque village, on the high road from Bristol to Wells and Shepton Mallet, 3 miles north from Binegar station and 2 ½ north from Chilcompton station, on the Somerset and Dorset railway and 2 ½ south from Hallatrow station on the North Somerset line of the Great Western railway, 13 south from Bristol, 14 south-west from Bath, 8 northeast from Wells and 7 north from Shepton Mallet, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Chewton, Clutton union, Temple Cloud county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, transept, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the nave is separated from the chancel by a fine Norman arch: there are several marble tablets to the Hippisley family; a brass eagle lectern, presented by Mrs. Naish, in memory of her husband, and an oak font cover by the parishioners: a new organ was erected in 1893: the church was thoroughly restored in 1890—91, at a cost of £2,890, under the superintendence of Sir A. W. Blomfield A.R.A.: there are sittings for 150 persons. The ground on which the church stands is 500 feet above the sea level. The register dates from the year 1572. The living, formerly annexed to Chewton, was separated by Order in Council Aug. 23, 1867, and declared a vicarage, with that of Farington Gurney annexed, joint net yearly value £60, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Arthur Robert Morrison Finlayson. The Dory charities, amounting to £224 17s. 1d. are invested in Consols, of which the vicar and churchwardens for the time being are trustees; the proceeds are appropriated to the support and maintenance of an evening school for boys. The Ston Easton Volunteer Fire Brigade consists of twelve men, with a steam fire engine and the usual appliances. R. J. B. Hippisley esq. J.P. captain. Ston Easton House is an ancient mansion of stone, the ceilings of which are ornamented with ancient wood carvings and the staircase is also of ancient oak: it is surrounded with shrubberies and stands in the centre of a beautifully undulating and well-wooded park, is the seat of Richard John Bayntun Hippisley esq. J.P. Clare Court is the residence of Mrs. Ivan Hippisley, and South Lawn that of Henry Edward Hippisley esq. J.P. R. J. Bayntun Hippisley esq. J.P. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loamy, with a subsoil of limestone. The chief produce is hay and pasturage. The area is 1,374 acres; rateable value, £2,844; the population in 1891 was 373.
Church School (mixed), erected in 1841, for 150 children; average attendance, 95; & principally supported by the lord of the manor.
