Historical Description

STRATTON-ON-THE-FOSSE is a parish and village, on the old Fosse or Roman road, and on the road from Bath to Shepton Mallet, 1 mile south-west from Chilcompton station on the Somerset and Dorset joint railway, 6 north-north-east from Shepton Mallet and 9 west-by-north from Frome, in the Northern division of the county, Kilmersdon hundred and petty sessional division, Shepton Mallet union, Wells county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Vigor is an ancient building in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisle, south porch and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the tower arch is a fine example of Perpendicular work: there is an ancient stone pulpit of the Early Perpendicular period, and a circular stone font: the church was restored and reseated in 1881—2, the windows reglazed and the chancel new roofed at a cost of £700, and in 1896 the roof was recovered with lead: there are sittings for 140 persons. The register dates from the year 1710. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £138, including 35 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of H.R.H. Duke of Cornwall and York K.G. and held since 1875 by the Rev. George Roach Hyatt B.A. Trinity College, Cambridge. There are charities amounting to about £8 yearly. Coal and ironstone abound in the parish. The manor and parish at the time of the Domesday survey were held by the Bishop of Coutances and next by Thomas de Sancto Vigore, who died in 1294: this property subsequently passed to the Gurney and Beaufort families, and eventually became a possession of the Crown as part of the Duchy of Cornwall, to which it still belongs. Stratton House, now a farm house and the residence of Walter Beauchamp esq. stands in very fine grounds, about half a mile from Downside and the same distance from Stratton-on-the-Fosse, and is an ancient manor house, formerly belonging to the Long family of Wiltshire, whose arms are over the door, and afterwards to the Knatchbulls, but now belonging to the Duchy of Cornwall; the apartments are panelled in oak throughout. The soil is various; subsoil, clay and limestone. The land is principally in pasture for dairy purposes. The acreage is 1,145; rateable value, £1,613; the population in 1891 was 297 civil, 294 ecclesiastical. The principal approach to the Catholic monastery of St. Gregory at Downside, is by a carriage drive from this place.

By Local Government Board Order 16,330, March 34, 1884, a detached part of Holcombe parish was transferred to Stratton-on-the-Fosse; by Order 16,332 the detached parts of Stratton-on-the-Fosse were added to Holcombe; by Order 16,328 part of Stratton was added to Kilmersdon, and by Order 16,333 part of Kilmersdon transferred to Stratton.

National School (mixed), erected in 1854, for 120 children; average attendance, 64.
