Historical Description

The parish of Street, the ancient Roman Strata Via from Glastonbury to Somerton and Ivelchester. This is one of the seven parishes which were secluded by King Ina from episcopal authority, and afterwards united by Bishop Brithelm to the jurisdiction of Glastonbury; to which monastery the manor, from very early times, belonged.

STREET is a populous parish and village, on the Great Western road, a mile and a half south from Glastonbury station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 8 miles southwest from Wells and 5 north from Somerton, in the Eastern division of the county, Whitley hundred, Glastonbury petty sessional division, Wells union and county court district, rural deanery of Glastonbury, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells.

Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), the parish is now governed by an Urban District Council of 12 members, formed in April, 1895, which takes the place of the Local Board established August 9, 1853.

The village is supplied with gas by the Glastonbury Corporation Gas Department.

The church of the Holy Trinity is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and a western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: there are sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1639. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £210, including 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Marquess of Bath. There is a Congregational chapel, a Baptist chapel, founded in 1814, a Wesleyan chapel erected in 1893, a Primitive Methodist chapel, and a meeting-house for the Society of Friends. The Street Club and Institute, the gift of W. S. Clark esq. J.P. is a building of stone, erected in 1885 from designs by Mr. G. J. Skipper, architect, of Norwich, at a cost of £6,000, and was opened by the late John Bright M.P. on October 12th of that year: it has a large hall, known as the “Crispin Hall” and capable of holding 800 persons, and a smaller hall holding 250, in addition to smoking rooms, a gymnasium, a library of about 4,000 volumes, and a museum presented by Alfred Gillett esq.: among the exhibits are numerous fine specimens of fossil fish and reptiles found in the blue has of this district. There are three factories for shoes, a leather board factory and numerous blue has stone quarries. Cox’s charity, being the interest of money amounting to £275, is annually distributed to the deserving poor. Abbey Grange, the property of Messrs. Clark is used at present (1901) as a School of Housewifery for the training of girls from various parts of Somerset as domestic servants. The Victoria Recreation Ground is a large area presented by W. Reynolds esq. and laid out in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, in 1897. Elmhurst is the residence of Mrs. Butt. Capt. Sir Alexander Fuller-Acland-Hood bart. M.P. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil blue lias. The land is principally pasture and orchard. The area is 2,913 acres; rateable value, £13,957; the population of the parish in 1881 was 2,514, in 1891, 3,517 and in 1901, 4,018. Overleigh is a hamlet, three-quarters of a mile south.

A School Board of 7 members was formed August 21, 1874; Joseph Hurniman Gifford, Vestry hall, clerk to the board & attendance officer.
