The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, chantry, nave of four bays, north aisle, south porch and a western tower containing 6 bells: in the chancel is a brass, with effigy in civilian dress, wearing a dagger, to Edmund Fforde esq. ob. 1439: above the effigy are three scrolls, with text from Job xix.; this brass was once on an altar tomb: there are sittings for 230 persons. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £248, including 13 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Oriel College, Oxford, and held since 1857 by the Rev. John Earle M.A. late fellow and tutor of that college, professor of Anglo-Saxon in the University of Oxford and prebendary of Wells. The charities amount to about £22 yearly. William Prynne, a politician, born here in 1600, was well known as a political writer in the reign of Charles I. and during the Commonwealth, and was repeatedly prosecuted in the Star Chamber on account of the libellous character of his writings, and on two occasions was pilloried, besides suffering the loss of his ears: he is chiefly known by a publication entitled “Histrio Mastix,” a tirade against the Drama: he died 24th October, 1669, and was buried in the church. The Provost and Fellows of Oriel College, Oxford, who are lords of the manor, and St. John’s Hospital, Bath, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy and the subsoil is lias. The, crops are corn, and some land is in pasture. The area is 845 acres; rateable value, £2,688; the population in 1901 was 562.
