Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
Overlooking the village of Tickenham, on the western extremity of Portland hundred, is a Roman encampment, called Chadbury Castle, containing about an acre of ground, and nearly of an oval form, fortified by a double rampart, 12 feet high, and composed of loose limestone, the produce of the spot.
TICKENHAM is a parish and long straggling village, on the southern declivity of a range of hills, at the foot of which runs a small mill stream; it is 3 miles north-west from Nailsea station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway, and 10 west from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, Bedminster union, Portbury hundred, petty sessional division of Long Ashton, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of SS. Quiricus and Julietta is an ancient building of stone in different styles, consisting of chancel with south-east chapel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, the oldest dating from 1632: the chancel arch is Early Norman: the arcades belong to the Early English period: the windows of the aisles and their parapets are Perpendicular; here is an Early English font in good preservation: the north aisle contains three curious recumbent figures; the first two, dating from the 13th century, are supposed to represent members of the Berkeley family, of Tickenham, who once resided at the Court-house; the third is the effigy of a lady wearing a whimple and a very long robe, held up by one hand: in the south-east chapel is some ancient stained glass, representing the Crucifixion: the church has been restored since 1873 at a cost of £1,600 and affords sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £140, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Henry Coulson Lory L.Th, of the University of Durham. The Brethren have a small chapel here. Cadbury Barrow, on the summit of a hill in this parish, is supposed to have been a Roman encampment. From this hill a good view of the Bristol channel may be obtained. Lady Greville Smyth, of Ashton Court, Long Ashton, is lady of the manor; and Sir Edmund Harry Elton bart. of Clevedon Court, Antony Gibbs esq. of Tyntesfield, Wraxall, William Jerdone Braikenridge esq. of 16 Royal crescent, Bath, and Miss Horler are the principal landowners. The soil on the north side of the village is sandy and loam, on a bed of limestone and rock; on the south it is marshy and peat. The area is 1,627 acres; rateable value, £2,349; the population in 1891 was 299.
