Historical Description

TIMSBURY is a parish and village, 1 ½ miles east from the high road from Bath to Wells and 1 north-west from Camerton terminal station of a branch of the Great Western railway, 8 south from Keynsham, 8 south-west from Bath, in the Northern division of the county, Chew hundred, Clutton union, Temple Cloud petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is a modern building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the churchyard is 516 feet above the level of the sea: the old parish church was pulled down and rebuilt in 1826: in 1852 the Rev. R. Hill M.A. then, rector, added a handsome chancel and transepts, from designs by the late Sir G. Gilbert Scott R.A. and in 1886 the old square pews and the north and south galleries were removed, under a faculty granted by the bishop: a new organ was also placed in the north transept at the same time, at a total cost of £690: there are sittings for 410 persons. In Nov. 1898 an addition was made to the churchyard, the ground being given by S. S. Samborne esq. J.P. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £325, including 65 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Balliol College, Oxford, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Leigh Thomas Rendell M.A. of that College. There are Congregational, Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels. The church land produces £16 16s. yearly, arising from the rents of two houses and gardens. In this parish there are two collieries, “Conygre” and “Lower Conygre,” varying in depth from 130 to 230 fathoms, both entirely free from explosive gas and in full work. The Somersetshire coal canal skirts, the parish on the south, but is now disused. Timsbury House, the seat of Samborne Stukely Samborne esq. J.P. is a fine old Elizabethan mansion. Pendoggett, the property of Capt. Francis Lamb Philp, of 7 Royal terrace, Weston-super-Mare, is at present occupied by Montgomerie Boyle esq. The principal landowners are S. S. Samborne esq. William Rees Mogg esq. of Cholwell House, Mrs. Bartholomew Smith and P. B. Poole esq. The soil is a rich loam; subsoil, white lias. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley, and about three-fourths of pasture. The area is 1,148 acres; rateable value, £5,434; the population in 1891 was 1,306.

National School (mixed & infants), erected in 1830 & enlarged at different periods, for 350 children; average attendance, 190 boys & girls & go infants.
