Historical Description

TINTINHULL is a parish and village, on the high road from Martock to Yeovil, giving name to the hundred in which it is situated; it is 1 ½ miles north from Montacute station on the Yeovil and Durston branch of the Great Western railway, 4 ½ north-west from Yeovil and 2 ½ south-west from Ilchester, in the Southern division of the county, Yeovil petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Martock, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Margaret is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a tower on the north side containing 5 bells: the chancel retains a fine double piscina: there is a brass, with three-quarter effigy in cope, to John Heth, rector of Tintinhull and Chisleborough, and canon of Sarum, ob. 1464; the inscription includes two Latin verses: there are other brasses to John Stone, rector, ob. 1416, and to Thomas Napper, ob. 1650: in 1885 the building was restored at a cost of £2,060, the south side of the chancel being rebuilt, new roofs fixed, the floor relaid and the interior reseated: there are sittings for 380 persons. The register dates from the year 1680. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £79, including glebe, with residence, in the gift of Viscount Arbuthnott, who is impropriator of the tithes, and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Gumley M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is an Undenominational chapel with 100 sittings. Viscount Arbuthnott, who is lord of the manor, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and George Sprackett esq. of Weston-super-Mare, are the chief landowners. A fossilised ichthyosaurus has been dug up here, measuring 22 feet in length. Glove making is carried on here, and provides employment for a large number of hands. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat and beans, and a large portion in pasture. The area is 1,990 acres; rateable value, £3,790; the population in 1901 was 437.
