Historical Description
TOLLAND is a parish and village, 4 miles north-by-east from Wiveliscombe station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 10 north-west from Taunton, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Taunton Dean, petty sessional division of Bishops Lydeard, Taunton union and county court district, rural deanery of Wiveliscombe, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of red sandstone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, with an arcade of three arches, and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the church was restored in 1872 at a cost of £700, and has sittings for 92 persons. The register dates from the year 1706. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £165, including 42 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1901 by the Rev. William Lucas, of St. Catherine College, Cambridge. Morgan’s charity is of 2S. 6d. yearly value. Gaulden Manor House, now a farm house, is internally of considerable interest; the principal entrance, on the west, opens into a passage leading on the Tight to the hall, an apartment 30 feet in length by 15 wide, with a panelled plaster ceiling, enriched in the centre with a fine fluted pendant: a deep cornice, running round the greater part of the walls, exhibits in plaster various subjects from the Old and New Testaments, including “The Temptation of Adam,” “The Presentation of the Head of John the Baptist,” “King David playing the Harp,” and emblematical figures, badges and numerous mottoes: over the chimney piece are four shields of arms, one being those of the Turberville family, of Bere Regis, Dorset; the remaining three have the same coat impaling Norris, Carew and Toner; on the stone lintel of the fireplace is the legend “Focus perennis esto,” and on the left side a partition of carved and panelled oak, with an ornamental plaster cornice; a door, over which are the initials “I. T.” leads through into a withdrawing room; these initials are assumed to stand for James Turberville, Bishop of Exeter (1555—60), who is believed to have lived here in seclusion after his deprivation in 1559, and to have then refitted and decorated the mansion. At the back of the house, in an orchard, is a fish pond, with an island therein, the surplus water flowing over the pond head by a stream into Tolland water at the foot of the hill. The manor of Gavelden or Gaulden, anciently one of the possessions of Taunton priory, was granted by Henry VIII. in 1544, to William Standish, who died 7 Edward VI. (1559); in 7 Eliz. (1565) it appears to have belonged to Francis Southwell, on the failure of whose issue it came to the Wynne family, by whom it was held till after 1587. There is now no manor. J. Baldwin esq. the trustees of Horner’s charity, and the trustees of the Yea family estates, are the chief landowners. The soil is clay, ragg and sand The crops are wheat, turnips, oats and barley. The acreage is 813; rateable value, £991; the population in 1901 was 115. This place is included in the United School Board district of Brompton Ralph & Tolland, the school being in the former parish.
