The church of All Saints, formerly belonging to the priory of Taunton, is an edifice of local stone of the Perpendicular period, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower of two stages, with pinnacles and containing 6 bells: some of the ancient 16th century benches have very richly carved ends; the series, as now existing, represents in part the ordinary Sunday procession of a small parish church of the period, and includes (1) a boy in a short surplice, carrying a cross; (2) a man in slashed trunk hose and short surplice, carrying a candle or torch; (3) a similar figure, wearing a maniple on the left arm and carrying a reliquary; (4) aman in a long surplice, holding an open book, possibly a deacon or a second priest; (5) the priest, vested in a fringed alb and embroidered cope, and holding an open book; neither holy water nor incense is shown: another bench end exhibits the Instruments of the Passion and the figure of a cock, and two more bear the letters “S” and “W” respectively, the latter letter being upheld on the beaks of two birds: at the back of the furthest seat are eight panels, ornamented with the linen pattern and bearing the inscriptions, “John Waye Clarke here” and “Simon Warman, maker of this worke, Ano. Dni. 1560:” on the pulpit are figures of St. John the Evangelist and the four Latin doctors: there is an ancient screen of carved oak and six stained windows: the church was restored in 1862—3, under the supervision of the late Rev. W. Jefferys Allen M.A. of Gatchell House, at the cost of about £250, taken from a charity fund left by some person unknown in the reign of James I.: the chancel was restored at the same time by F. W. Newton esq.; in 1890 further restoration was carried out at a cost of £582, and the church now affords sittings for 320 persons. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1670; marriages, 1678. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £150, with residence, in the gift of Francis Murray Newton esq. of Barton Grange, and held since 1882 by the Rev. John Henry Southam M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. F. M. Newton esq. is the owner of the great and small tithes. Here is a small Baptist chapel, built in 1895. Queen's (Wesleyan) College, situated in this parish, is described under Taunton. The parish lands produce £100 yearly, which is divided into four equal parts, one for the maintenance of the fabric of the church, one for the support of the school, and the remaining portion for distribution in clothing and money. The Wyatt charity produces £20 yearly, half of which goes towards the maintenance of the school, on condition that fees to that amount are returned to Trull children; the other half being expended in providing prizes. Gatchell House is the residence of Lt.-Col. Ussher Lee Morris. The trustees of the late Rev. Beauchamp Kerr-Warren Kerr-Pearse M.A. (d. 1900), the trustees of the late Mr. Dening, Mr. William Thomas, Mrs. Corner and Miss Blake are the chief landowners.
