Historical Description

TWERTON (or Twerton-on-Avon) is a village and parish, on the river Avon, with a station on the main line of the Great Western railway and is 1 ½ miles, west from Bath and 107 from London, in the Frome division of the county, Wellow hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, rural deanery of Keynsham, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. Under the provisions of the Boundary Act, 1868 (31 end 32 Vict. c. 46), a portion of this parish is now included within the parliamentary borough of Bath. The church of St. Michael, a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, was rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1885—6, at a cost of £6,300, under the direction of Mr. E. Buckle, and chiefly at the expense of the Messrs. Carr, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles with organ chamber and vestry, north porch and a low western embattled tower, with pinnacles and containing 8 bells: the seats in the nave and aisles are of oak with square traceried ends of various patterns: the choir stalls are similarly treated, but have poppy heads: the pulpit is of oak, very handsomely carved, and has figures of angels at the angles: there is also a beautiful reredos of alabaster in three compartments; the central portion contains a group of “The Last Supper, " and above are figures of St. Michael and St. Gabriel: the east window is stained, the subject being the “Ascension:” the north porch incloses a fine Norman doorway: there are sittings for 450 persons. A number of cottages on the north side of the church have been pulled down in order to enlarge the churchyard. The registers date from 1538 and are fairly perfect. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £320, including 56 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Oriel College, Oxford, and held since 1876 by the Rev. William Stokes Shaw M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, prebendary of Wells and rural dean of Keynsham. St. Peter’s church, erected in 1880, at a cost of £4,600, is a building of stone, consisting of apsidal chancel and nave, and will seat 450. Adjoining the church is the church house, erected in 1888: Sunday schools are held here as well as meetings connected with the church and parish, and those of the parochial club now numbering about 300 members of both sexes; there is also a gymnasium. St. Michael’s mission room is at Twerton hill. There are Wesleyan, Baptist, Congregational and Free Methodist chapels, and one for the Brethren. Early closing day Thursdays, at 5 p.m. A Cemetery of 2 ¼ acres, on the north side, of the Great Western railway, was opened July 8, 1881, at a total cost of £2,000; it contains one mortuary chapel and a caretaker’s house, and is under the control of a committee of the Parish Council. Twerton Club and Institute, established in 1838, has reading, smoking and recreation rooms and a hall for meetings, holding 250 persons. Twerton Union Club, formed in 1888, occupies a building in Lower Bristol road, which contains reading, bagatelle and billiard rooms, a refreshment bar, coffee room, skittle alley and concert room: there are now about 300 members. Here are has quarries, containing ammonites. There are also brick works and manufactories of woollen cloth, a clothing factory and a large cabinet factory. In the village is a house once occupied by Henry Fielding, the novelist. Messrs. Carr are the principal landowners. The chief crops are market garden produce and about two-thirds of the land is in pasture. The soil is clayey; subsoil, freestone and lias. Area, 991 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £34,755; the population in 1891 was 7,685 in the civil and 7,657 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882” (45 and 46 Vict. c. 58), a detached part of Twerton has been amalgamated with English Comb, and by Local Government Board Order, 18,114, March 25, 1886, a detached part of English Comb was added to Twerton, for civil purposes.

A School Board of 9 members was formed November 12, 1875; Francis Glover, clerk to the board; F. Bond, 42 Maybrick road, Twerton, attendance officer.

East Twerton Board School (boys, girls & infants), erected in 1878, at a cost of £4,074 & enlarged in 1889, by the addition of an infants’ school; it will hold 212 boys, 198 girls & 298 infants; average attendance, 219 boys, 198 girls & 280 infants.

South Twerton Board School (boys, girls & infants), erected in 1893, at a cost of about £6,000, for 172 boys, 163 girls & 236 infants; average attendance, 172 boys, 163 girls & 215 infants.

West Twerton Board School (boys, girls & infants), erected in 1898, at a cost of over £11,000, for 224 boys, 224 girls & 224 infants; average attendance, 170 boys, 130 girls & 120 infants.
