Historical Description
UBLEY is a parish and village, on the north side of the Mendip Hills, on the road from Bath to Weston-super-Mare, and surrounded by lofty undulating and picturesque hills, 6 ½ miles west from Sandford station on the Clevedon branch of the Great Western railway, 10 north-north-west from Wells and 12 south from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, Chewton hundred, Clutton union, Temple Cloud petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. A tributary of the river Yeo flows through the parish. The church of St. Bartholomew is an elegant structure of carboniferous limestone, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles and a spire, and containing 4 bells: there is a piscina on the south side of the chancel and another in the south aisle: in the chancel is also a chained, copy of the Paraphrase of Erasmus on the New Testament, dated 1522: the oak communion table dates from 1637, and the east window is stained: a silver and glass flagon and a silver paten have been presented to the church by the lord of the manor: the church was thoroughly restored in 1875, at a cost of £1,078, and in 1876 the north porch was added: there are 170 sittings: the churchyard was considerably enlarged in 1895, and consecrated in 1807. The register dates from the year 1671. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £220, including 79 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1897 by the Rev. John Arthur Jones M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford.
The rectory house, adjoining the church, is a substantial building, and was restored in 1878. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Hazel Manor is the residence of Charles Gathorne Hill esq. J.P. and Col. Sir Edward Stock Hill K.C.B., V.D. The charities, including the rent of the poor’s land, a field of 2 acres, and the interest on about £58, produce about £6 yearly, which is distributed in bread and money. A fair is held on the 4th September, yearly here for cattle. Lead ore is found here; and on the Mendip Hills in this parish are Roman remains. Benjamin Edward Somers esq. of Mendip Lodge, Churchill, is lord of the manor; Charles Gathorne Hill esq. Col. Sir Edward Stock Hill K.C.B. and John Gifford Everett esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are oats, and most of the land is in pasture. The acreage is 1,800; rateable value, £2,264; the population in 1901 was 332.
