Historical Description

UPHILL is a village and parish at the mouth of the Axe on the Bristol Channel, with a station, called Bleadon and Uphill, on the Great Western railway, and is 2 miles south from Weston-super-Mare and 139 from London, in the Wells division of the county, Winterstoke hundred Axbridge petty sessional division and union, Weston-super-Mare county court district, rural deanery of Locking, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Nicholas, erected in 1844, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower, containing one bell; the Early English font, formerly in the old church, has been removed to present church; in 1892 a new chancel was built, the floor of the nave laid with wood blocks and new oak benches replaced the old fashioned high pews: the oak reredos, choir stalls, and wrought-iron gates to the chancel were gifts, and the brass lectern was presented by C. E. Whitting esq. in memory of his wife Maria E. Whitting, d. March 16, 1879: the total cost of the restoration amounted to upwards of £2,100, of which the present rector and Mrs. Burr contributed £1,200; in 1896 the interior walls were decorated, and in 1897 two paintings on zinc by F. A. Smallpiece, of Birmingham, representing angels with censer and harp, were placed on either side of the east window: there are sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1696, and a list of the rectors of Uphill, from John de Gidding, 1318, up to the present day, hangs in the tower. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £170, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Col. Henry Platt C.B. of Llanfairfechan, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Arthur John Burr M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The old church, which stands on the summit of a hill near the village, probably occupies the site of the Roman Axium, and is an edifice of stone, in the Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and a central tower, containing a musical peal of 5 bells: the porch, owing to the subsidence of the sides, has assumed a horse-shoe shape: there is a priests’ doorway on the south side of the chancel, and Norman doorways on each side of the nave: the tower is strongly buttressed, and has a curious three faced gargoyle on the south side, and an octagonal turret at the north-east angle, with a spired crocketed capping and finial: in the nave are slabs inscribed to Samuel Baker, rector, buried Nov. 9th, 1725, also to John, son of above Samuel Baker, died Jan. 29th, 1706: the tower and chancel have been thoroughly repaired, and are now used as a mortuary chapel: a burial ground inclosed by a stone wall surrounds the church. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, served from Weston-super-Mare Uphill Manor, the seat of the Knyfton family, is a castellated residence, with a tower and turreted porch, and stands in park-like grounds of about 36 acres, commanding a fine view of the surrounding hills, and is approached from the Weston road by an entrance lodge. The Royal West of England Sanatorium is in this parish. Reginald Benett Graves-Knyfton esq. who is lord of the manor, and Charles Edward Whitting esq. J.P. are the chief landowners. The soil is sand The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,127 acres of land, 6 of tidal water and 633 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,298; the population in 1901 was 768, and 110 patients in the Sanatorium.

Moorland Road, formerly in this parish is now in Weston-super-Mare.

Elementary Schools (mixed), erected in 1872, by the late Thos. Tutton Knyfton esq. at a cost of about £1,300, for 150 children; in 1889 a new class-room was added by the late Mrs. Knyfton, the number of children on the books now being 135; average attendance, 122.
