Historical Description

WALTON is a parish and village on the road from Glastonbury to Bridgwater, 3 miles south-west from Glastonbury station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 6 south from Somerton and 11 east from Bridgwater, in the Eastern division of the county, Whitley hundred, Glastonbury petty sessional division, Wells union and county court district, rural deanery of Glastonbury, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of the Holy Trinity, rebuilt in 1866, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and a tower on the north side, with dwarf pyramidal broach spire, containing a clock and 5 bells: the whole of the windows except two in the chancel and one in the nave are stained: there are sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1682. The living, formerly annexed to the rectory of Street, was separated and declared a rectory by an Order in Council, May 11, 1886, net yearly value £385, including 20 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Bath, and held since 1889 by the Rev. John Edward Loughnan B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The Marquess of Bath is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil blue has stone. The chief crops are wheat, beans and pasturage. The area is 3,163 acres; rateable value, £1,721; the population in 1891 was 504 civil, 494 ecclesiastical; the population of the civil parish, in 1901 was 421.

By Local Government Board Order 15,665, March 25, 1885, a detached part of Butleigh known as Kings Sedgmoor was amalgamated with Walton for civil purposes.

National School (mixed), founded 111 1840 & rebuilt in 1876, for 130 children; average attendance, 62.
