Historical Description

WALTON-IN-GORDANO is a small parish and village, in a vale on the shore of the Bristol channel, 2 miles north from Clevedon terminal station of a branch of the Great Western railway, and 12 west from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, Portbury hundred, Long Ashton petty sessional division, Long Ashton union, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary, Walton-by-Clevedon. the original parish church, and formerly dedicated to St. Paul, after being for many years a complete ruin, was rebuilt and reconsecrated at the end of 1870, and now consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, north porch, vestries and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the lower stage of the tower is the only remaining portion of the 15th century building, in the style of which period the nave and north aisle of the present church have been erected: the walls of the nave, raised on the lines of the old foundations, mark the exact proportions of the former church: the chancel follows the style of the 13th century, remains of work of that early date having been discovered in excavating the ground: the east window contains many interesting fragments of French glass of the same date: in the eastern wall are niches: there are sittings for 500 persons: in the churchyard stands at ancient stone cross, 20 feet in height, on a base of three steps, the upper portion of which has been renewed. The register dates from the year 1684. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £180, including 28 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Henry Robert William Miles bart. and held since 1899 by the Rev. Edward Francis Amyas Hext M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. The church of SS. Peter and Paul, Old Walton, rebuilt in 1839, and restored in 1874, is an edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and a small western turret, containing one bell: the stone font is said to have belonged to the original church: there are sittings for 100 persons. The Convalescent Home of the Sisters of Charity, Lady Bay, a branch of the House of Charity of St. Raphael, Bristol, erected in 1873, is available for 12 male and 20 female patients. On an eminence to the west of the village are extensive ruins of an ancient castle built in the reign of James I. Sir Henry Robert William Miles bart. of Leigh Court, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is light and sandy; subsoil, limestone and rock. The area is 1,165 acres; rateable value, £5,452; the population in 1901 was 731.
