Historical Description

WEARE is a large parish, containing, besides the village of its own name, Upper and Lower Weare, the villages and hamlets of Alston Sutton and Brinscombe, in the Wells division of the county, Bempstone hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Burnham, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. Weare is on the road from Bristol to Bridgwater, and is 3 miles south-west from Axbridge station on the Cheddar Valley branch of the Great Western railway, and was formerly a place of considerable note. Lower Weare was anciently a borough, and from 1304 to 1307 sent, two members to Parliament, except in 1306, when only one was returned; the place was also honored with many other privileges from the reign of Henry I. to that of Edward III. The river Axe passes through the northern part of the parish, and is here crossed by a stone bridge of one arch. The church of St. Gregory is a building of local stone, in the Perpendicular style, erected in the time of Henry VII. consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, vestry, a fine embattled western tower with a pierced parapet and four pinnacles, and containing 5 fine-toned bells: on the exterior of the tower are two canopied niches: in the nave, and facing the chancel, is a brass with the effigy of a merchant with a gypciere attached to his girdle, and an inscription to John Bedbere, c. 1500: the font is Norman: there are fragments of ancient stained glass in one of the windows, one of which bears the initials J.B.; and another the five wounds; a third, the chalice and water; and the last a crown with the monogram “I.H.S.”: in the churchyard is an ancient cross, raised on a base of four steps, the total height being about 10 feet: the church was restored and a north aisle added in 1846, at a cost of £800, and in 1886 a new organ, erected at a cost of £250: during a more recent (1901) restoration, the removal of the plaster from the walls of the sanctuary brought to light the ancient aumbry and piscina, and on the west side of the chancel arch a doorway was found to the staircase leading to the rood-loft: there are sittings for 200 persons. The register dates from the year 1673 and a list of vicars is kept, dating from 1309. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, with residence and 37 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Frederic Charles Skey M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The vicarage house has been altered and enlarged, at a cost of £700, partly at the expense of the present vicar and partly from Queen Anne’s Bounty. Here are Wesleyan, Baptist and Bible Christian chapels. The Men’s Club, formed in 1896, has about 20 members. There is also a Band of Hope of 40 members. The market once held here on Wednesdays, and also an annual fair, are now both extinct. Badgworth Court is the seat of Mrs. Henry A. Fownes-Luttrell. The trustees of the late Sir Charles Mordaunt bart. of Walton Hall, Warwick (d. 1897), are lords of the manor of Lower Weare, Mrs. Fownes-Luttrell, Edward Arney esq. and Mrs. Mary Hicks are the chief landowners. The soil is various, mostly light, with fine pasturage; the subsoil is clay. The acreage is 1,729; rateable value, £4,211; the population in 1901 was 440 civil, 536 ecclesiastical.

Stone Allerton, 2 miles south, was by Local Government Board Order 17,341, Mar. 25, 1885, transferred to Chapel Allerton; other alterations by the same Order include Wellfield House, transferred to Mark, a part of Allerton and Washbrook from Chapel Allerton, and Washbrook Quab House from Wedmore.

National School, Upper Weare (mixed), built in 1840, & rebuilt in 1895, at a cost of £450, for 80 children; average attendance, 44 & endowed with £15 yearly.
