Historical Description

WEDMORE is a township and parish, seated on rising ground, surrounded by moorland and on the road from Highbridge to Wells, 4 miles south from Cheddar station on the Great Western railway, 8 north-west from Wells, 6 from Axbridge and 22 south from Bristol, in the Wells division of the county, eastern division of Bempstone hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Axbridge, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Axe divides it from the hundred of Wells Forum, and the Brue bounds it on the south; it is divided into five tithings, namely, Wedmore, The Borough, Churchland, Blackford and Northload the last being in the hundred of Glastonbury Twelve Hides. Theale and Blackford, ecclesiastical parishes taken out of this parish. This is an ancient borough, governed by portreeves chosen at the anuual court, when bread-weighers, ale-tasters, a swine-herd and bailiffs are appointed, the proceedings being, however, now little more than a formality. The township is lighted with gas. The church of St. Mary Magdalen is a cruciform edifice of local stone of the 14th and 15th centuries, consisting of chancel with lateral chapels, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and a central tower with pierced parapet, and containing a clock with chimes and 8 bells: there are a few ancient monumental tablets and brasses to the Hodges, Boulting and other families, including a brass with the figure of a heart, and the following quaint inscription:—

“Wounded not Vanquisht.”

“Sacred to the memorie of Captain Thomas Hodges, of the county of Somerset, esq.; who at the siege of Antwerpe, about 1583, with unconquered courage wonne two ensignes from the enemy, where, receiving his last wound, he gave three legacyes: his soule to his Lord Jesus, his body to be lodged in Flemish earth, his heart to be sent to his deare Wife in England.

Here lies his wounded heart, for whome One kingdome was two small a roome;

Two kingdoms therefore have thought good to part So stout a body and so brave a heart.”

There is another brass effigy in buff coat, breeches and jack boots and wearing a long sword and carrying a pike, to George Hodges esq. ob. c. 1630: the fabric was restored in 1880—81, at a cost of £2,775 when it was reseated with open oak benches, partially re-floored, the roofs re-leaded, and a clock with chimes added: the door of the porch is of oak ornamented with wrought iron; it bears the date 1677 and the initials “K.E.,” “E.S.,” and “C.W.” worked in nails: there are sittings for 550 persons. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 70 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Joseph Byrchmore, of Queen’s College, Birmingham. The Baptist chapel seats about 200, and there are other Baptist chapels at Crickham and Clewer. The Wesleyan Methodist chapel, erected in 1617, is of brick with stone dressings, and affords 400 sittings; attached is a large Sunday School, built in 1896: there is also a Wesleyan Methodist chapel at Heath House, seating about 70. Here is a reading room, for the use of the inhabitants. Assembly rooms were erected in 1868, by a company, but have now become private property. The charities are now vested in the official trustee of charity lands, who is locally represented by six trustees, including the vicar and churchwardens; J. Wollen esq. by will in 1844 left £1,000 to the poor, the interest to be spent in clothing for the second poor; this benefaction now (1901) brings in £25 yearly and is distributed in clothing at Christmas: the same Mr. J. Wollen also left £200, for the Charity Church school, which yields £5 yearly: sums of money left by various donors at different times for the poor and widows, and amounting to £4 4s. yearly: Miss Burrow, who died in 1872, left £100 for the coal club; the annual interest is now £3 10s.: Mrs. Culverwell, who died in 1875, left £300, which now produces £8 15s. a year: William Edwards, who died in 1867, left £200, which now brings in £5 12s. 4d. and also £200 for repair of the church roof, which yields £5 yearly: Mrs. Lewis, who died in 1835, £100 for the poor, the yearly interest being £1 2s. 8d.: James Toogood, a farmer, left, in 1854, five acres of land, the yearly rent, about £11, to be spent in Bibles and in other rewards to the labouring poor: in 1818 the Church Charity day school was bought for £245, and £568 collected for its endowment, and in 1881, on the establishment of the Board School, this money was devoted to rebuilding the Sunday School and vestry room: a benefaction of £153 in Consols, given by an unknown donor, and producing about £8 10s. yearly, is distributed in money. Two fairs for cattle are held annually, on the last Mondays in July and September. This place anciently belonged to the deanery of Wells, and once had, it is said, not less than eleven chapels, each provided with a priest; the remains of one chapel, dedicated to St. Cutlor, are still visible at a place called Marchey. A pot of silver coins, of Sweyn (1013) and Hardicanute (1039), was found in the churchyard in 1851, and is now in the British Museum. Sand Hall is the residence of Mrs. Edwards, and Sand House of Mrs. White. The principal landowners are Mrs. Emily Julia Bailey, who is lady of the manor, the representatives of Edward Webb Edwards esq. Joseph George Dawson Wollen esq. Mrs. E. C. White, the trustees of Arthur Phippen esq. the visitors of the Bruton Hospital and Reginald Benett Graves-Knyfton esq. of Uphill Castle. The soil is varied, abounding with very rich loam, and the moors are very valuable for dairy purposes, much of the celebrated Cheddar cheese being made here. A great quantity of turf is dug, which, when prepared, is used for fuel. It is the second largest parish in the county, the area being 10,280 acres; rateable value, £24,654; the population in 1891 was 2,891, and in 1901, 2749 in the civil and in 1891, 1,801 in the ecclesiastical parish, and in 1901, 1,648.

By Local Government Board Order 17,341, Mar. 25, 1885, Frog Farm was transferred from Wedmore to Mark, and under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882” (45 and 46 Vict. c. 58), Washbrook Quab House was transferred from Wedmore to Weare.

A School Board of 5 members was first formed April 5, 1875; J. B. Millard, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed & infants), built in 1876, for 360 children; average attendance, 200.
