Historical Description

WELLOW is a parish and pleasant village, with a station on the Somerset and Dorset joint railway, 108 miles from London and is 5 south from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, Wellow hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The parish has now an excellent supply of water, which has cost about £1,500. A portion of this parish (550 acres and about one-third of the: population) is now included in the ecclesiastical parish of Peasedown St. John. The church of St. Julian, originally Norman, is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, restored and rebuilt A.D. 1370, and again restored in 1845, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a, clock and 6 bells: there are several monuments to the Hungerford family: the original oak benches remain and a beautifully carved open oak roof: a new chancel was added in 1890, from the designs of Messrs. Bodley and Gamer, architects, of London, and a new organ has been erected as a memorial to the Rev. George William. Horton M.A. vicar of this parish 1859—86: a stained east window has also been erected. The register dates from the year 1561, and also contains a list of ornaments used in the church about 1700. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £104. including 62 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1886 by the Rev. Le Gendre George Horton B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels. Here is Bray’s Down coal pit, which is in full work. A fair is held on the 17th of October, yearly, principally for sheep. The Manor House, erected in 1634, and formerly the residence of the Hungerford family, is now the property of J. G. Willis esq.; it contains some fine oak carving and is at present occupied by Mr. J. E. King, farmer. There is a Celtic burying place on the manor of Stoney Littleton, the property of Lord Hylton, and some tesselated pavement on the site of a Roman villa, in very good preservation, on land belonging to Earl Temple, who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is brashy, and the subsoil bastard freestone and blue lias. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats, and about two-thirds pasture. The area is 5,392 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £7,012; the population in 1891 was 1,430.
