The church of St. George is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: in 1868 a great part of the church was destroyed by fire, but has been rebuilt, and was re-opened in 1870: there are sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1672. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £325, with 7 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1894 by the Rev. James Mellor Evans, of Durham University, who is also vicar of the donative of Durleigh. There are several villa residences in this parish, chiefly occupied by merchants and tradesmen of Bridgwater. Sir Bartholomew Mitchell’s charity of the yearly value of £8 10s. derived from 3a. 0r. 12p. of land, is distributed in clothing. At Mount Radford is a quarry, the stone from which is much used in the neighbourhood for building purposes. The chief landowners are the trustees of the late Lady Oglander, of Nunwell, I. of Wight, Seward Brice K.C. of 22 Old square, Lincoln’s Inn, and William Brice esq. of The Oaks, Wembdon. The soil is red sand and marl mixed with loam; the marshes are clay; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, bariey and green crops generally. The area is 2,409 acres of land, 25 of tidal water and 77 of foreshore; assessable value, £4,335; the population in 1891 was 1,193 civil, 1,293 ecclesiastical.
