Historical Description

WEST BRADLEY is a parish, 3 miles south from Pennard station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 4 east-south-east from Glastonbury and 7 west-north-west from Castle Cary, in the Eastern division of the county, Glaston Twelve Hides hundred, Shepton Mallet petty sessional division and union, Wells county court district, rural deanery of Shepton Mallet, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church (dedication unknown) is a building of blue lias stone in the Late Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave and a south porch with an embattled tower at the west end, dating from about 1400, and containing 3 bells, dated 1606: at the east end of the chancel are image brackets and two others on either side: there are remains of a piscina, and on the north side the rood stair turret, lighted by one small window: the nave roof, though modern in, appearance, is original, with additional mouldings: the lower stage of the tower is vaulted: the church was partly restored in 1851 and completely so in 1874, when an organ chamber was added: there are sittings for 120 persons. The register dates from the year 1633. The living, which includes Lottisham, is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Edward Rapson. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1881, and seating 100 persons; the Bible Christian chapel was erected in 1836 and has 100 sittings. The tithe barn here, a structure of the 15th century, is supposed to have been erected by Richard Beere, abbot of Glastonbury, 1493—1524. The trustees of Mr. Thomas Maidment (who are lords of the manor), and Messrs. T. H. Colston, William Thomas Allen, J. Barrington and the trustees of the late Sir Henry Jenkyns K.C.B., M.A. (1899), are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil is clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,449 acres; rateable value, £3,670; the population in 1891 was-of West Bradley, with Lottisham, 237, and of part, of East Pennard, joined to West Bradley for church purposes, 296, and in 1901, 204 civil.

A School Board of 5 members was formed June 1, 1875, with East Pennard contributory sending three members.

Board School (mixed), built in 1876, at a cost of £1,108, to hold 100 children; average attendance, 54.
