Historical Description

About two miles eastward from Wellington, is the village of West' Buckland, situated on the north ridge of Blackdown Hills. The land in this parish is very good. The church, dedicated to Saint Mary, is a handsome Gothic structure, consisting of a nave, chancel, two aisles, and a tower at the west end.

WESTBUCKLAND is a scattered village and parish on the road from Taunton to Wellington and Exeter, 3 miles east from Wellington station on the Great Western railway and 5 south-west from Taunton, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Kingsbury West, Wellington petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wellington, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary, standing on an eminence, from which there is an extensive view of the surrounding neighbourhood, is an ancient edifice of stone, partly in the Norman style, with later additions, and consists of chancel, nave of two bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and a turret on the south side and containing 5 bells: three windows in the chancel and one in the north aisle are stained: the font is Norman: the south wall contains the rood loft stairs, and there is a holy water stoup in the south porch: the church was thoroughly restored in 1891 at a cost of £ £950, and affords sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1568. The living is a chapelry, annexed with Trinity chapel to the vicarage of Wellington, joint net yearly value £850, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1889 by the Rev. William Walker Pulman M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford, who resides at Wellington. The great tithes of the parish were commuted at a rent-charge of £400 yearly. At Chelstone is a chapel of the Plymouth Brethren, and at the five cross ways another with a minister’s residence attached. The chief landowners are William Ayshford Sanford esq. of Nynehead Court, Wm. Alexander Richards, William Bird, the Rev. Noblett Hy. Granmer Ruddock M.A. of 3 Beaconsfield road, Upper Knowle, Bristol, O. G. Walter, Mrs. Hill, John Hine, Maj.-Gen. Emerson, of Trull, Taunton, Mrs. Fisher, of Brighton, Miss Blake, William John Lock esq. of Gortnell, Theodore R. W. Lunt esq. and Arthur Eastwood esq. of Angersleigh. Messrs. Thos. Temlett Marke and Wm. Temlett Marke are also landowners of this parish. The soil is of excellent quality, generally a strong loam, and produces prolific crops of wheat, beans, barley, mangolds and swedes; subsoil, red sandstone. The area, is 3,687 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £7,371; the population in 1901 was 721.

A School Board of 7 members was formed February 12, 1873; W. A. Richards, Westbuckland, clerk to the board.

Board School, erected in 1882, for 120 children; averager attendance, 80.
