Historical Description

WEST COKER is a parish and village on the high road from London to Exeter, 3 miles south-west from Yeovil station on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, in the Southern division of the county, Houndsborough, Barwick and Coker hundred, Yeovil petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Merston, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Martin is a building of stone in the Early Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with side chapels of two bays, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and containing 6 bells, and a clock erected in 1887 at a cost of £100: in the tower are two small and ancient horn windows: there are seven stained windows, the east window commemorating the restoration of the church in 1864; two in the south aisle are memorials to Charles Podger (1864) and Mrs. Susannah Chaffey Fussell (1859) respectively, and there is another to the Rev. William Laurence Cotter M.A. rector here 1880—98: there is a monument with kneeling figures to Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Sir John Portman bart. and wife of John Bluet esq. of Holcombe, and to Grace, his fourth daughter, who died unmarried: a new organ has been presented by Miss Wood at a cost of £600: the church has been restored since 1873 at a cost of £733, and affords sittings for 517 persons: a lych gate was erected in 1898 by the parishioners as a memorial to the Rev. W. L. Cotter M.A. The register dates from the year 1697. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400, witih residence and 18 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Cotter trustees, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Charles Lowe M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and hon. canon of Manchester. Here is a small Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1839, and a meeting room for the Brethren. There is an almshouse, founded by William Ruddock in 1719, for six poor persons, four of whom receive two shillings per week each and one one shilling per week, the other having no pension; the other charities include Mrs. King’s of £2 yearly, for poor widows and spinsters; Rodbard's, consisting of freehold land, let in 48 allotments at 7s. yearly each, and Miss Sarah Moor’s of £5 yearly, for teaching girls to read and sew. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the manufacture of twine. West Coker House, the property and residence of Lt.-Col. Edmund Henry Berkeley J.P. is a large and handsome mansion of Ham stone, enlarged and considerably improved in 1892, and surrounded by well laid-out grounds containing an ornamental sheet of water. Westlake is the residence of Major Robert Aldworth J.P. West Coker Manor House is an ancient building of the 14th century, and belonged to the Earls of Devon until about 1600, when it was bought by John Portman esq.; it was restored about 1885, and is the property of Mr. Thomas Moore, and is now (1901) in the occupation of Edward Heskett Formby esq. The Hon. Sir Spencer Cecil Brabazon Ponsonby-Fane G.C.B. of Brympton, Viscount Portman, Thomas Moore esq. the Cotter trustees and Lt.-Col. E. H. Berkeley J.P. are the chief landowners. The soil is loam and sand; the subsoil is clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots; there is considerable pasture. The area is 1,367 acres; rateable value, £3,824; the population in 1891 was 892, and in 1901, 818.
