Historical Description

WEST CRANMORE is a parish and village, with a station on the East Somerset branch of the Great Western railways, and is 3 ½ miles east from Shepton Mallet and 111 from London, in the Frome division of the county, Wells Forum hundred, Shepton Mallet petty sessional division and union, Wells county court district, rural deanery of Shepton Mallet, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Bartholomew is an ancient edifice of local freestone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: there are memorial windows to Admiral Sir E. Chetham Strode K.C.B., K.C.H. d. 1862, Capt. Julius Strode, 14th Regiment, to Lady Chetham Strode, and one placed in 1895 in the south porch to Alfred Cheetham Strode esq.: in the church is preserved an antique open bier, now used only in the church; it has the inscription: “ICHARD DOLE CHURCHWARDEN,” but no date: there are sittings for 200 persons. In the churchyard is an ancient cross, 15 feet in height, in good preservation. The register dates from the year 1659. The living is a chapelry, annexed, with those of Earl Cranmore and Downhead, to the vicarage of Doulting, joint net yearly value £400, in the gift of J. F. Fortescue Horner esq. of Mells Park, and held since 1899 by the Rev. John Darbyshire M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge, who resides at Doulting. The Rev. William Trevor Quinn, of St. Aidan's, curate in charge, resides at East Cranmore. In this parish are the “Black Rock” stone quarries, and lime, gravel and asphalte works, from these an output of 100,000 tons of stone, lime and asphalte is annually sold and delivered throughout the kingdom; the stone is purely a local deposit of an extremely hard nature, in appearance much like granite; the gravel has special properties, and is largely used for carriage drives, side walks &c.; the asphalte is made by machine process, and the lime is of the carboniferous strata and very productive (on slaking). The various works afford employment to a considerable number of men. A great quantity of cheese and butter is made here. South Hill House, the property of Frederick Spencer esq. J.P., D.L. of Pondsmead, Oakhill, Bath, and lord of the manor, is a mansion of stone in the English Domestic style, situated in a well-wooded park, and is now the residence of Miss Belgrave. F, Spencer esq. is the only landowner. The soil is sandy; the subsoil is freestone and limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The acreage is 1,611; rateable value, £2,852; the population in 1891 was 287, 1901, 295.

National School, erected in 1840, for 70 children; average attendance, 56.
