Historical Description

WEST HARPTREE is a parish and village, on the road from Bristol to Wells, 6 miles south-west from Clutton station on the Bristol and Radstock extension of the Great Western railway, 8 north-east from Wells, 11 south from Bristol and 16 south-west from Bath, in the Northern division of the county, Chewton hundred, Clutton union, Temple Cloud petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Norman and Gothic styles, consisting of chancel, nave, with an arcade of three arches on the south side, south aisle, north transept, south porch and a western tower of Early Norman date, with lofty spire, containing 4 bells: there is a fine circular font: the church was almost rebuilt in 1864 at a cost of £1,400, when the transept was added: around the church there are eight large yew trees of great age, about 50 feet high, each cut in a conical shape: there are sittings for 200 persons. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1656; marriages, 1655; burials, 1661. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £248, including 20 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of the Duchy of Cornwall, and held since 1871 by the Rev. George Pridham, of Clare College, Cambridge. £25 is yearly distributed by the Parish Council from Plummer’s charity, and £14 by the vicar and churchwardens from George Wookey’s charity. There are two manors-the Gournay Manor, held by the Duchy of Cornwall, and the Tilley Manor, of which Arthur E. Newton esq. of Henlaid Lodge, Taunton, is lord; these, and Edward Ranulph Leacroft esq. of Rowborough Manor, are the chief landowners. Gournay Manor House and Tilley Manor House, situated in the village, are both old and interesting buildings, now converted into farm houses, but contain some good mantelpieces and oak panelling and staircases. The soil is light, and the subsoil is gravel and sand. The chief crops are wheat, beans and oats, but mostly land in pasture. The acreage is 3,046; rateable value, £3,396; the population in 1901 was 326 in the civil and 327 in the ecclesiastical parish.
