Historical Description

WEST HATCH is a parish and village, on the main road from Taunton to Ilminster, 1 ½ miles west from Hatch Beauchamp station on the Chard branch of the Great Western railway and about 5 ½ south-east from Taunton, in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of North Curry, Taunton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. Part of Sedgemoor belongs to this parish. The church, supposed to have been dedicated in honour of St. Andrew, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave of four bays, north aisle, organ chamber, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the church, including the tower, was rebuilt in 1861, and a north aisle added, from designs by Mr. E. Ferrey, then diocesan architect: there is a memorial window in the chancel to W. H. P. Gore-Langton esq. who died in 1873: there are sittings for 235 persons. The register dates from the year 1606. The living, originally a chapelry, annexed with that of Stoke Gregory to the vicarage of North Curry and under the peculiar jurisdiction of the Dean and Chapter of Wells, was separated and declared a vicarage July 10, 1866; net yearly value £231, including 5 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Wells, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Abraham Daniel Reece M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. The charities are of £5 2s. yearly value. There are several quarries, from which blue has stone is obtained, some of which is converted into lime. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor and lay rectors. Lieut.-Col. the Hon. H. P. Gore-Langton, of Hatch Park, Viscount Portman, Charles Wm. Dare esq. and William Henry Lloyd esq. of Hatch Court, Hatch Beauchamp, are the principal landowners. In the lower part of this parish the soil is a fine rich red loam, while the upper part is of a clayey nature. The chief crops are wheat &c.; beans and teazels are grown here. The area is 1,677 acres; assessable value, £1,407; the population in 1891 was 378.
