Historical Description

West Monkton, a manor anciently belonging to the Abbey of Glastonbury, upon the suppression of which it became vested in the crown, and was granted to Sir William Powlet. It has since become the property of Sir C. W. Bampfield. On the site of the old mansion-house, near the church, has been erected an elegant modern building, called Court House, the seat of M. Brickdale, esq.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WEST MONKTON is a parish and village, on the main road from Taunton to Bridgwater, 3 miles west from Durston station on the main line of the Great Western railway, 4 miles north-east from Taunton and 7 south-by-west from Bridgwater, in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of Whitley, Taunton petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Tone and the Taunton and Bridgwater canal pass through the south part of this parish. The church of St. Augustine is a building of stone in the Early English and Later styles, consisting of chancel, with aisles, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and lofty embattled western tower of rag stone of the 14th century, containing 6 bells: the chancel arch, one of the earliest parts of the church, appears to date from about 1240 or 1250; the nave was probably erected in the middle of the 15th century and the west doorway is a good example of Early Perpendicular: there are several original piscinae, and traces of wall-painting were met with at the restoration; the reredos is of Beer stone, and there are sedilia of old oak, presented by the Rev. F. C. Kinglake M.A. rector 1882—1900: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. William Chapman Kinglake M.A. rector 1838—82: there are memorials in the church to Richard Musgrave esq. 1727, with arms, and to others of this family; Rev. Timothy Locket M.A. rector, 1688; Rev. Alexander Popham LL.B, rector, 1738, and Mary, his wife, 1754; and William Kinglake, physician, 1660: in 1884 the church was restored at a cost of about £1,000, under the direction of Mr. G. C. Strawbridge, architect of Taunton, when aisles were added to the chancel, choir stalls erected, the chancel roof raised and restored, the church reseated with oak benches, new pulpit and font of Beer stone substituted for those previously in use, the tower arch opened and other work carried out, in the course of which the ancient rood loft staircase was discovered, and, in the chancel wall, a two-light squareheaded window, which has been re-set and glazed; a figure of St. Augustine has been placed over the doorway: there are sittings for 250 persons: in the churchyard are two fine yew trees and the old parish stocks and whipping post, both in good preservation. The parish register dates from the year 1710. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, including 45 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1900 by the Rev. William Edmund Buller M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and Prebendary of Wells. The charities are of £35 yearly value, of which £23 15s. is distributed in kind and £10 2s. in money, the remainder being assigned to educational purposes. In the village is an ancient hospital for lepers, now an almshouse, founded in the 12th century, and rebuilt by Richard Beere, abbot of Glastonbury, in the 15th century, and on the exterior is a panel displaying his initials, surmounted by a mitre; a simple wooden cloister extends along the front: for a more extended account see Taunton. Walford House, the seat of Lieut.-Col. William Oliver Meade-King J.P. is a handsome mansion, erected about 1800 on the site of an ancient house, and is surrolinded by well-timbered park-like grounds of about 70 acres, especially rich in elm and oak of large growth: the grounds are situated partly in the parish of West Monkton and partly in that of Creech St. Michael, the two parishes being divided by an ornamental stream of water which intersects the property: the shrubberies and pleasure grounds exhibit some remarkably fine specimens of rhododendrons and other choice evergreens; on the west side of the mansion is a conservatory. Sidbrook House is now occupied by Major-Gen. Archibald H. Utterson C.B. Springfield is the residence of James Paine esq. Monkton House is the residence of Mrs. Thomson. Gotton House, the property of Miss Besly, is now (1901) unoccupied. Viscount Portman, who is lord of the manor, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland, Mrs. C. H. Meade-King, and James Paine esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is in the lower side of the parish rich alluvial; subsoil, old and new red sandstone and various. In the higher side of the parish are several quarries, from which are obtained good building stone and a vein of very hard road stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots, and there is some pasture land. The area is 3,171 acres of land and 25 of water; assessable value, £7,741; the population in 1891 was 949 in the civil and 964 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 18,141, March 25, 1881, the municipal part of West Monkton parish was added to Taunton St. Mary Magdalen Within.

Monkton National School, Heathfield, erected in 1845, for 163 children; average attendance, 122.
