Historical Description

WEST PENNARD is a village and parish, on the Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet road, with a station 1 mile north-east from the village on the Somerset and Dorset railway, and is 3 miles, east from Glastonbury, 5 ½ south-east from Wells and 128 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, eastern division of Glaston XII. Hides hundred, Glastonbury petty sessional division, Wells union and county court district, rural deanery of Glastonbury, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Nicholas, erected in the reign of Edward IV. is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower with boldly projecting buttresses, a panelled and embattled parapet, crocketed pinnacles and a short octagonal spire, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel and nave have elegant parapets, pierced with quatrefoils and relieved at intervals by crocketed pinnacles, those of the chancel springing from the buttresses; there are also enriched pinnacles on the eastern gable of both nave and chancel; the parapet of the south aisle and porch exhibits a pierced trefoil-headed arcading; the latter has a parvise, lighted by a single window, on either side of the head of which are four crosses: there is a fine rood screen: the church affords sittings for 350 persons: in the churchyard, opposite the porch, stands a tall cross, rising from an octagonal base of four steps; the lower portion is moulded and panelled, and from this rises a circular shaft; the head is lost. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £250, with residence and glebe (£4), in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Roger St. John Gresley, prebend of Wells. There is a Wesleyan chapel seating 120 persons. A fair is held on the last Monday in July yearly. The Earl of Sandwich is lord of the manor, Charles E. H. A. Colston esq. of Roundway Park, Wilts, Henry George Norris esq. and Frederick Joseph Hayes esq. are chief landowners. The soil is sandy loam, and the subsoil is clay. The land is chiefly pasture. The acreage is 3,184; rateable value, £8,226; the population in 1901 was 662.
